the groupage operater bought by Leggetts was called ‘BTS express’.
A50 wwj and A269 came to the Bredbury depot from Enfield (i think).

i knows all about 702!!
we had some white dafs come from your way did not stay long then went on to enfield reddish had a few A reg scanias A180/181VNO were two that i knew of i remember they had this beast of a truck C425ANC used on the tyre run you could hear the thing for miles on a clear night we also had some 17.5T mercs N230/231GBM they went off to brum and we got some P regs in return remember the lawn tech contract? and pendigo It was busy and then things just started to go down hill still we had some good fun more so with loads like this
I think I have a picture of C425ANC, will have to get posting some. This was Leggett’s last Seddon Atkinson, was definitely Gardner engined, possibly 8 cylinder?? I remember Pendigo now, and MV Sports, which had some standard 40’ curtainsiders (green and purple) with fixed middle decks, the first ‘double deckers’.
Just found another old pic in this thread. Part of the Jim Taylor collection.
I drove the same as above but mine was s689, Great days!
C425 was used to pull the tyres from stoke up to scotland it was a cross between a chieftain and tiger tank i only ever saw it three times in swindon Couple of other motors we had pass through were B293/95AMK we also had an ex kammac volvo E396TJA but like the other good motors they went on to enfield The double deck trailers that i hated the most werethe swing decks the idea was good but a lot of the times either through laziness or the securing bolt not working you would pen the curtain and te deck would be just that swinging Anyone remember the thornycroft contact for FWW (woolies)
Sorry, don’t remember Thornycroft. I agree about the swing - decks though!
thornycroft were the sweets various flavours!!! packed in large bags then palletised they used to come out of reddish as a full load Your depot used to send out some weird loads but you may remember the washing machine front lids and peterlee glass but for me some of the heaviest loads came from bothwell they were bell&bain and harper collins we ended up delivering a fair few of enfields bell&bain loads as they kept on failing the delivery
Now I remember Thornycroft. This also reminds me of the Hannah’s ‘mix - up’ sweets we used to do for Bothwell. The washing machine windows were Newells (Corning Glass), which we did until ‘the end’, along with Dataform & Moore Paragon (heavy print pallets), the big sacks of bean - bags for Makro stores (nice and light for top decks, I would be surprised if you had never opened a curtain and been hit by some!) and Blendex spices (many of which were for difficult next - day areas).
fuda fuda fuda used to hate the damm things no fun in tipping a top deck load in the pouring rain and freezing cold yep remember the sweets ex bothwell strawberry and white mice and various others We used to send up paper to you for dataform in large reels it came up from shepton mallet they had to uprate the engine in S430 BKN due to the weight of the loads there was another one you used to send us on euro pallets normally 15-20 at a time bound for newent on the glos/welsh border
Hi,I know that Leggetts had a depot in Thetford Norfolk.I had occasion to drive for them on agency,They had a couple of MAN 4 wheelers in addition to the artic fleet, mainly ERF.My nieghbour Sandra Cook at one time worked in the office.
Regards Mick
I think there were 13 depot’s at one point.
Ones I remember are:
Enfield
Swindon
Hams Hall
Bridgewater
Bothwell
Thetford
Reddish
There are more, but I can’t remember them all. I think Manchester area had 2 depots. Not sure though.
And Peterlee!!, Stockport did have two depots, Reddish and Bredbury. Bredbury was the ‘original’ Stockport but later became the admin / workshop / storage facility when Reddish was acquired from Placketts as the ‘transit’ depot. There was also a depot at Rotherham in later days.
Birmingham also had two loacations; Hams Hall and Sparkbrook. Sparkbrook may still be in existance, I am not sure. Nice to hear about “Sandra from Thetford”, Mick, please pass on regards from “Andy at Peterlee”. We had one two of the MAN rigids a Peterlee, awkward around tight corners if I remember rightly!
sparkbrook is gone it is now
Unit3, Argyle Street, Meteor Park, Birmingham, B7 5TE
you also had rotherham faversham nottingham then there were change over places such as crick (radlett FWW woolies) leicester for the parcel contract watford gap for the Mcbrides contract In the old days scotch drivers could not get to reddish and back in time so there was a trailer swap at leyland Bridgend was next to sony at Pencoed Bridgewater shared with Gerber foods until they moved just across from argos BWR and of course peterlee swindon first of was next to the old PMH hospital then over to the old shrivenham rail station then the old jones yard at south marston
Peterlee used to change at Grantham with Enfield too. Stand by for photos, I think I’ve figured out how to upload!!
Hi exleggett, yes i remember those MAN 4 wheelers were a little arkward in tight turns.
Re Sandra have no contact now as I live in Spain,I belive Sandra retired and moved to Ipswich.
Regards Mick
herbington:
hello
here are a few names that some of you may remember !!
Herbington,
What happened to Terry Car? last time I spoke to him he was at Stockport, I had thirteen years with Leggetts out of Enfield on the European side run by Roy Cook, made many good friends on there and have many happy memories, good firm to work for, sad its now gone.
Happy days.
Ossie
Certainly remember some of these! Kenny Hood, Keith Raby and Marshall Higgins were Peterlee staff (would still be Hetton-le-Hole depot in 1986 I think), Bill Bailey was Enfield European, Ivor was in Bredbury accounts. Barry Dudley is still in the Stockport area; I spoke to Keith France recently, and he is still in contact with some people, Barry included.
