I’m wondering has anyone any experience changing a lorry from left hand drive to right hand drive? Thinking about buying a lorry and drag outfit from the continent
Its easier to just adapt to be able to drive a left ■■■■■■ rather than reconfigure it.
Cheaper too.
Here is one we prepared earlier

Absolutely…why would you even think of going to that much expenditure which is bound to throw up some unforseen problems anyway.
You’ll get the hang of it the first few days, my advice would be to get a camera on the o/s step to avoid side swipes… or at the very least a fresnel lens.
Another tip get some kind of marker in the windscreen in line with the inside verge of the road to stop you getting into the grass.
The only ‘problem’ you will find is when driving your car at weekends, with the strong possibility of kerbing the wheels,.as when in a lhd driving it in the UK, your brain is telling you to hug the near side of the road.
All that is much cheaper than a conversion…(.well maybe apart from your car alloys. )
Ring Richard or Paul at CPR Commercials in Scotter, Lincolnshire.
They’ve done conversions in Scanias.
Blimey, that sounds like a lot of work for not a great result. Does it have the same driver all time? As the only thing I can think of justifying it would be if it was driven by many.
Sorry you asked a question and I waffled.

I’d be interested .(…well ‘interested’ is maybe a stretch ) more curious, as to
how much it would cost.
Can’t be cheap, and the money spent would buy a lot of diesel, from an owner driver’s pov.
Depends on what model he is buying but generally second hand Scanias are cheaper on the continent, perfectly possible to pick up a left hand drive, convert it and it still be cheaper than buying the same model in the UK, personally I would leave it as it is but perhaps not an option if different people are going to drive it.
Second hand Scanias are overpriced in the UK but people are prepared to pay the price, one well known haulier has just bought a couple of two year old S series V8’s the owner said he sold them because the offer was to good to turn down.
Thanks for the info men, it would be only me driving it the main reason I’m thinking of a conversion is because I am looking at pezzaioli livestock deckers and drags on a dolley, the roads and yards I would be on will be narrow this is why I prefer the rigid and drag. There is a great selection of these outfits through Europe compared to here I just have no idea how much a conversion would cost. I’m starting to think a 30/35ft decker on a tractor unit might be a more straight forward option.

Have a look and see what is for sale in Ireland quite a few livestock firms there running the combination you’re looking for so there maybe something about.
I used to work in research and development for the motor industry many years ago.
We had a vehicle workshop for the application of gearboxes to prototype vehicles on behalf of major manufacturers.
There was a surplus left hand drive Ford 3 litre Capri in lovely condition sitting around spare and doing nothing.
Usually vehicles like this which were finished with, went for supervised scrapping or broken up so that they could not be used again.
On this occasion during a slack period the mechanics were given permission to convert it to right hand drive for further use.
They did a good job, when finished and polished up it was the dogs whats its.
Only when they came to move it outside they found a snag. When they turned the steering wheel to the left, the wheels actually turned to the right. Oops, how we all laughed.
They had reused the LHD steering rack because it fitted well on the RHD conversion. In reflection, not such a good idea after all.
The moral of this story is to give your converted left ■■■■■■ a good check over before you part with your cash.

How cool would it be to keep the original controls so it could be driven from either side!

Slightly side note, but if you’re looking at livestock transport, this article might be of interest incase DEFRA screw about with it. It popped up randomly in my feed.
When Swatch and Mercedes did the smart car, they were all left hand drive, there were some horrendous conversions done and companies charged a fortune, steering racks fastened on with Jubilee Clips, master cylinders that moved when you pressed the brakes, wipers getting fast on bodywork, drivers side catching fire as the battery stayed where it was.
Why oh why would you even bother…

Maybe im being thick (and theres a very real possibility) but cant you just buy a RHD model in the first place? Why does it have to be a continent model that you convert?
Since no one else has suggested it im assuming there might be a good reason not too, and bitter experience has taught me to get my ducks in a row before using sarcasm!

I think that from what he says it is unlikely that he will find exactly what he is looking for in the UK.
There is a small selection here and I am based in Ireland d, the pezzaioli outfits on the continent are easily 20 to 30 grand cheaper

Give John Toal in Middletown Armargh a call he has experience of doing conversions and would be able to give you a rough figure.
