Left-Hand Drive B-series ERFs

To be honest…I did not proceed very much on Swiss info but assume that ERFIM AG was managed by
the couple (so Mr. and Mrs. Imboden-Vogt) and thus called ERFIM or an equivalent to ERF Import. On
the old location now Transport Georg is located and they bought the workshop and its content early '90

A Swiss one that slipped through the net earlier. Robert

An old B-series (LHD) ERF being moved somewhere in Holland, by the look of this picture. Robert

And here’s a Spanish artist’s impression (Manel Maseras) of a LHD B-series ERF at work! Robert

Upon closer inspection, the unit being towed by the Dutch truck appears to be one of those R&R Fries ERFs (pictured below), pulling a period Belgian frigo trailer. I have blown the picture up for you to make more sense of. Robert

So! The Greeks were interested in LHD B-series ERFs after all!! Robert

One of three with Jennings sleepers supplied to De Vos with 290 ■■■■■■■■ According to Dutch transport historian, Wobbe Reitsma, Best Imports sold 16 B-series ERFs to Dutch operators between 1976 and 1980. You will notice from evidence on this thread that several of them had Jennings sleepers, and I can only assume that they were used for domestic short-haul work as these brick lorries were; the full ERF factory sleeper versions goint on TIR-work. In addition to the 16 sold in Holland, Best Imports may well have sold others to operators in France, Belgium and Luxembourg. A-J might be able to fill us in on that. Robert

Hello Michel! Jona has just rescued one of these Zucconi units for preservation. It’s got a ■■■■■■■ 290 and 13-speed Fuller in it. Robert

I’ve mentioned the B-series 6x4 left-hookers belonging to Caravan Trucking of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, before on this thread, as well as Star Commercials. John West has an excellent website called Middle East Trucking Stories on middleasttruckingstories.co.uk and he features some of these ERFs on ‘internals’ in there.

Here a few of his ERF pics. They’re all John West or Andrew West photos. I hope he doesn’t mind me popping them on here to strengthen up our thread (I can remove them if requested). Robert

Does anyone know which TRUCK magazine Euro Test featured the LHD B-series ERF pictured further up this page? I suspect '77 or '79 but I need the month and the year. Robert

Hello Robert, who lives Jona ?

Robert,
I have all 30 years issues of Truck magazine, including the annual Supertruck issues and the 2 Customtruck issues, but unfortunatley i do not have a scanner. Maybe since your book won,t be ready for christmas, i,ll write to santa for one.

Hello Robert,

I was pleased to see you’ve captured the Caravan ERFs from my website. I only discovered this site recently, and as you know I’ve added some memories to the Simons thread.

I’m currently working my way through the Astran/Middle East thread, trying to avoid the handbags at dawn! Making notes when reminders are there - I only did about 7 months overland before shunting trailers from Iskenderun, then spending 11 years in Saudi, starting with internals and finishing in 1987 as General Manager at Al Qafilah al tjara wa al qudmat al ahma - Caravan! It was a steep learning curve at first!

Brother Andy did overland until the middle eighties, and knows all the names here, though they may not remember him, he is a quiet retiring soul, who just got on with the job!

Unfortunately I didn’t keep a diary and as have so many have said, the memory for names and faces fade somewhat at 66 years of age!

Intend to write on the Middle East thread about SAM, Saudi Arabian Movements, Tony and Tim wilkinson, trips to Abha, Khamis Mushayt, also Sharourah, well into the empty quarter, trailers previously loaded with carbon black, Overheating, Scanias, Bonneted Mercs, Arab trailers - oh and ERFs.

Not sure whether to start now, or continue to read the rest of the thread to ensure I’m not regurgitating stuff others have covered.

Have been contacted on my visitors page by 22 year old - well he was then! Jerry Cooke. Also Martin Mears from Trans Arabia - they ran oeufs too. I understand they both have pictures!

Best wishes,

John

I can’t give posters’ addresses out on a public forum Michel. Why don’t you send a PM to him: I’m sure you would find him helpful. Good luck! Robert

Thank you for your gracious contribution to this thread, and for allowing me to use the pictures on here. Keep persevering with the Astran thread, John, the handbags-at-dawn phase disappears entirely after the first 80 pages or so. Intermittently, there are quite a lot of contributions from drivers who did ‘internals’ (Whitetrux, Saramat, CAMEL, Astran, Trans Arabia etc).

You mention Jerry Cooke. I have got to know him well because he has been most helpful to me while I was putting together my new book Lorries of Arabia: ERF NGC which is coming out in March. If you go to the ERF ‘European’ 1975 thread there is a lot of stuff about Trans Arabia and other ERFs on ‘internals’. And I have written quite a lot about Trans Arabia in the book. There many pictures on that thread taken by Mick Jones (Jona) too. Happy reading! Robert

Here’s one I nicked off Facebook.

Hey, Which handle ■■?
And an ERF or in France.

Bye Eric,

It’s not a handle. It’s a flexible map reading light.

At least that export ERF has the full factory sleeper cab! Robert
