Left-Hand Drive B-series ERFs

This puzzles me a little. Why, as late as 1976, would ERF be trying to market a day-cabbed ‘Euro-truck’ at the Amsterdam show? Carryfast had some scathing things to say on this subject on the ERF European thread a while back! Robert

Only my point of view…the sleeper was not available yet and also DAF was active with only day-cabbed F1600, F2000 etc
even MB’s were day-cabbed (think of Van Gend & Loos) and Scania for milk-collection etc.

Ah yes, of course! Van Gend & Loos were the Dutch equivalent of our BRS, and ran many day-cabbed units. Robert

Now here is an interesting picture, kindly emailed to me by Mick Jones. Looking at the fleet numbers (117, 118, 119 & 120), they appear to be the four cancelled Swiss order units with 290 ■■■■■■■ and 13-speed 'boxes. They were the first four B-series that went out to Jeddah for Trans Arabia and they are seen here prior to shipping. This is the only picture I’ve ever seen that shows any of Trans Arabia’s B-series ERFs with sun-visors. Did they all fall off, or were they discarded by disgruntled fitters and drivers, I wonder? Robert

Can anyone remember the bloke who ran a erf on continental work ,i think his name was bob and the truck was called [the cajon queen] i think,TRUCK magazine did a article on him years ago, robert can you remember    im sure he was on the front cover stood in front of the truck with his rottweiler

Yes, I know the one you mean - but it was RHD mind! Actually, I think there’s a pic of him on the (RHD) ERF A, B, & C-series thread; but in case there isn’t I’ve just bunged a couple of pics on there for you! Robert

That ERF was 4x2 and was painted black and was on tipping work, that i can remember Seth, but seeing photos of truck that Robert has posted has stirred memory!! as you said he is a really nice lad, last time i saw Kevin was 2007 ish,ta,Pete

Where did i get bob from :unamused: :unamused: i know the unit had alot of home made extras on it ,a tag axle and plenty of diesel tanks with pipes all over, more stuff on the dash and front window than enough

Here’s another pic of Nick Bull’s ex-Millfield unit. Robert

And here’s another picture of one of the Millfield ERFs, taken by Gary Donnelly. Robert.

I found these cuttings from an old '70s TRUCK magazine. It is clearly from one of Pat Kennett’s Euro Tests which included a LHD B-series ERF. Does anyone have the original whole test they could scan? Robert

Good input on the trucktest and I recognize some familiarity with the Belgian ERF ZZA.520 out
of “World Trucks No. 1” from Pat Kennett…same savoyarde…

Here’s a picture of WNR-987S, a LHD B-series on Middle-East work. I found it in an article called ‘East Ending’ in TRUCKING magazine April 2005, about Chris Hooper the Astran subbie. That’s Chris Hooper standing on the right in the picture. Perhaps the ‘C’ in CVH stands for Cantrell, because Chris did Middle-East for them in the mid-'70s - someone can confirm or deny this. Below that I’ve re-posted a picture of the same vehicle on Jubilee Way, I put on the thread earlier. Robert

Owing to the kindness of A-J (ERF-Continental), I am able to produce a new image of one of Trans Arabia’s LHD 6x4 B-series ERFs; also a brilliant interior view of the cab, though judging by the gear-stick it isn’t the same vehicle! Robert

CVH was Caerphilly Van Hire. Astran subbies

Cab-interiors of 1977 B and 1981 Super B. Sorry the 1981 picture was already cut, so strange?

Also (proceeding on the ERF-European-thread) some Dutch input on the suspension-system on
3-axled B-series. The drawings speak for themselves I think?

Enjoy the World-Soccer! A-J

Nice collection! The first picture tells circa 1976…but with all respect (quote ZB anorak: about 1978 the head-lamps
and especially the box around was replaced by the more flat ones) I think it is likely 1979-1981 as sleepers (not the flat
Jennings ones) like the one here came much later than 1978? Is it?

Thanks for that. Robert

Useful observations, A-J; and some nice contributions re. interiors and axle diagrams. Enjoy the Summer! Robert
