Left-Hand Drive B-series ERFs

From 1978 Observers Book of Commercial Vehicles. ie: spot the LHD B-series! Robert

robert1952:
Here’s a picture of WNR-987S, a LHD B-series on Middle-East work. I found it in an article called ‘East Ending’ in TRUCKING magazine April 2005, about Chris Hooper the Astran subbie. That’s Chris Hooper standing on the right in the picture. Perhaps the ‘C’ in CVH stands for Cantrell, because Chris did Middle-East for them in the mid-'70s - someone can confirm or deny this. Below that I’ve re-posted a picture of the same vehicle on Jubilee Way, I put on the thread earlier. Robert

Hi, the C stands for Caerphilly as in Caerphilly Van Hire. That’s my Dad Ron Slater on the left - he was driving the ERF for CVH at the time.

Thanks for that detail Dave! Here’s the pic again. Cheers, Robert

Swiss LHD B-series. Robert

Apparently the Stammler-familiy was affected with the ERF-virus

You may remember I posted this picture early in the thread. Well, I now believe it to be 57-HB-51, a Dutch unit in the livery of De Bruin. Parked beyond it is a second ERF B-series unit in a similar livery. I’ll post a better picture on here in a few days time. Robert

Good research Robert! As a matter of fact there are about 20 transportcompanies (small and big) with
DE BRUIN as name. I assume the picture is made in the yard of a trader, so no operations nor parking.

No doubt to be continued!

Which De Bruin do you think it might belong to, A-J, now that you have a registration number? Robert

It concerns “A. de Bruin Krimpen Transport” from Krimpen a/d IJssel near Rotterdam

The “IJssel” is a river and you’ll will recognize Vermeulen from Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel.

De Bruin was (and still is) active in containertransport (just like Van Rumpt and Groeneboom)
around Rotterdam/ECT-region.

Very informative, thank you. Nice link-ups too, with other info we had. Cheers! Robert

I now have the photo in question for your perusal! Robert

Mission accomplished! The year of registration is 1976 for this B-series and as said it’s parked next to
other (awaiting a buyer or shreder) patients on a yard of a trader, possibly Kleyn Trucks or Van Vliet.

Here’s a bit of a ‘fly in the ointment’! Jerry Cooke mentioned to me recently that some LHD C-series ERFs were exported with surplus-stock B-series SP cabs. To back that up, I have just found an entry on another ERF thread in which the blogger called ‘ERF’ who really knows his stuff (ie not ‘ERF-continental’ / ‘ERF-lover’ / ‘ERF-MAN’ etc!) states also that some C-series were exported with B-series cabs instead of the SP3 cab normally associated with the C-series. This makes accounting for hundreds of Taseco vehicles quite difficult, and indeed many of the Middle-East LHD exports because it won’t be so easy to identify them by photographs alone. The thick plottens again! Robert

I notice that Old Pond is just about to release a new book in the Patrick Dyer’s ‘at work’ series: B, C, E & EC series ERFs. It’ll be interesting to see if any export models are featured in it. Robert

I bought the book aforementioned in the previous post. It’s very good! Stacks of pics and info. Plenty of LHD B-series in there with photos I haven’t seen before. Thoroughly recommended. The proper title is ERF B, C, CP & E-series. Robert

A cutting from the Telegraph, 7th January 1981. This could explain the subdued enthusiasm for getting the Euro-B-series abroad. Robert

Another terrific shot of a Trans Arabia LHD B-series from ‘Ronhawk’ on the Trans Arabia thread!

Richard Stanier photos is always a wonderful source of really good photo evidence of our favourite heritage lorries. This fabulous picture doesn’t disappoint! LHD B-series ERFs destined for, or arrived at, Star Commercials on the Arabian Peninsula. What a feast! Robert
