exercise caution here, just got 3 points £60 in post doing 55 past the static gatso - saw the thing and thought i’d be ok as on national limit single carriageway (60 for cars…), but got the NIP through. Just waiting now for the licence to come back to see what the code is.
In got one at the gatso by the lincs showground.
All it said was exceeding the speed limit for the class of vehicle.
Most of them can tell the difference between HGVs and cars.
If in doubt, assume they can and drop your speed, or even better just do 40mph.
I know the road you mean, good place to put a revenue collecting device.
As a regular user of the A17,I know the camera you are talking about.
I’ve never been caught on it personally, but one of my colleagues has.I ALWAYS slow down to 40mph at that camera, but, yes,it’s hard to when your fully freighted up,and you’ve just come down the long hill.
It’s the same with the 3 cameras outside RAF Cranwell.Again,I always slow down for them, even though they are of the Truvelo variety, with the loops in the road surface.I would be interested to know if anyone has been caught on those.
Luckily,I know all of the static spots on the A17/A47,right into Great Yarmouth, but it’s the painted white lines on these roads, that are there for the mobile rozzers that you have to worry about.
And on a parallel subject.Beware if you are going into Yarmouth on the Acle straight. (Single carriageway-40mph) Norfolk constabules, use a plain white Renault Master type van with 2 cameras peering out through the back doors. If I’m correct in saying, the police have to warn you that speed checks are taking place, but these bunch of sneaky barstewards, put the notice at the front of the van,or in other words, the side where the cameras aren’t facing,so unless you see the van before you are in range, you’ve had it.
[(zb)wages fines for travelling at a 50mph on a open stretch of road (I know he was doing 55 richard cranium, before you post - (zb)(miss-spelt) that like to pick up on every mistake- but can’t come up with much original yourselves brigade).
For a modern LGV with disk brakes,- a sensible speed.
This job just gets worse.
Kick a dog when it’s down.
Drive a truck in fog on the motorway loose concentration hit a car kill somebody -2yrs in JAIL
Responsible for £90000 worth of kit plus load, + other road users.
40mph we’re going back to the (zb)’ 60s.
And all for the generous remuneration of wait for it…
£7.00 an hour - (zb) - cough
And… they wonder why the 20,000 people with an HGV license choose to stay off the road.
Driver shortage my ■■■■, more like a pound-note shortage to me.
CBR the police often sit under the bridge as you come down the hill there, with a camera be warned Lincolnshire is a bad place for cameras i got an sp20 just north of Lincolnshire showground when they were sat behind a bush.
Linconshire Police are some of the worse in the country for targeting HGV’s doing a few mph over the 40 / 50 so take care.
I’m sure one of the reasons they have such a high accident rate is that everyone spends more time watching mirrors & speedo than the road.
Got my first ticket from the camera at Long Sutton on the A17. We had been running from Lynn to Donny for several weeks off and on and cos i was young and naive (and everybody else seemed to be doin it) it was limiter whenever i got the chance. Then one day out of the blue the camera decided it could differenciate between lorries and other classes of vehicle and i got clocked at 53. Later found out 10 others on the same run got done in the same week. They must’ve changed the software in the camera or something 'cos from the outside it looked exactly the same. The one on the A505 between Duxford and Royston was the first one i remember that could tell a truck from a car, but that one had a post in front of it which sensed if you were over a certain height. You’re fighting a losing battle nowadays, so i reckon join the Tesco brigade (and a lot of others now) and stick to 40. If everyone does it maybe people will get so [zb] off that they’ll put the limit up to 50 on decent roads like the A17. Shant be holding my breath though.
changing letters to get it passed the sensor gives you an idea it shouldn’t be there,jb
The last double manned job I did over the water was with an ex traffic cop (never again!) he did say though, that greed cameras have always had the capacity to differentiate between the size of vehicles but for some reason this was not utilised until recently. The new one on the A5 between Hinkley and Atherstone has been set and has caught many local drivers.

It was obviously to lure us into a false sense of security, then they switch it on and catch ten times as many.
My dad was caught out by the new camera on the A15 above Caenby corner North bound a month or so ago doing 49mph. In my opinion the most dangerous thing isn’t trucks doing 50-55 its trucks doing 40 and causing such tail backs and queues that all the car drivers take break neck risks to get past them. If only every truck or even half the trucks in the country would run at 40mph on single carriage way roads for only a week, there would be such disruption and chaos that I’m sure a speed re-think would eventually have to take place. On a lighter note! My dads boss is offering £100 to anyone who knocks down the speed cameras on the A15!lol.
As for the cameras telling the difference between car and truck. What about me in my van? Every single van driver I’ve spoken to seems to be under the impression that vans have the same speed limits as cars, little do they know how wrong they are! We’re only allowed 50mph on single carriage A roads and 60mph on dual carriage ways and 70mph on motorways. I know alot of van drivers are idiots with a death wish and tram down the roads at 80mph plus anyway. Would these greed cameras consider me a truck or a car by virtue of the size of my vehicle? I was under the impression that these cameras could tell between cars and trucks but not at once, they were either on truck mode or car mode? Either way its an absolute disgrace that a driver should have points put on their licence when their lively hood depends on being able to drive and having some points for something as pethetic as driving at 49mph down the A15 could make it impossible to earn a living in the future. Hasn’t anyone taking this to the European Court of human rights yet?
ill probbly get blast for this but a simple answer DONT SPEED you aint going to thank you for it and he/she isnt going to pay your fine either simple really intit
well, I’m not crying about it because I knew the speed limit. The licence came back today with an SP10 coding on.
I think the sentiments throughout this thread are correct, that 40mph can be dangerous. For the record I was in an unloaded RCV (refuse collection vehicle aka Bin Wagon).
Last week, I was driving in Lincolnshire in a Hino chassis cab that I had collected from Bootle. Driving along the A17 at 40mph was boring, mind wanderingly boring in fact - but the 7 or 8 artics that overtook me with oncoming traffic certainly made life more entertaining…Its time for a review of the speed limits. Perhaps a dry/light speed limit with a lower wet weather limit may prove useful?

Don’t speed . So what speed is it on the A27 Alix I thought it was 50mph myself so how come I never caught you up when I was doing 57mph along there out of Chichester recently … .
With due respect Alix, but the phrase ‘practice what you preach’ springs to mind .
Another sneaky place to find a mobile camera in Lincolnshire is just at the start of the 30mph limit on the A158 Lincoln - Skegness road at Wragby. I’ve seen them there 3 times now. Luckily the drivers coming the other way have used their thumbs and so we’ve been pre warned, but I’m always ready now. Strange also how the only camera on the Lincoln by-pass is half way down the hill on the dual carriageway section - must be an especially dangerous hill that one! Now made more dangerous by the person in front standing on the brakes when the camera comes into view.
