Layby, industrial estate, services or truck stop

If you leave it too late in the day you won’t find a space to park in at the services anyway !!!

Shower, shave, ■■■■■ in the services but I found parking on the industrial estates better, depending on the area of course. MSA’s are too noisey, trucks in and out all night, trailer changes and they stink … If possible I liked to try and park near to where I’m tipping in the morning, handier

I’ve had my mirrors nicked off the truck when I’d gone for a shower and the back doors opened in MSA’s so they’re not as secure as they claim !!!

All these truckers only one step up from a gippo…

If your company won’t pay for you to park in a truckstop/services find a better employer. Bet you’ve got a nice shiny motor but are on £7/hr as well.

My company will pay for beer tokens holidays anew moterbike and overnight parking in a lorry and anything else I want I’m on more than 7 quid an hour and I do confess to be driving a shiny truck
Ow I also own the company so put that in ya pipe n smoke it

drivergraham:
Ok I have been working class 1 tramping for a year now and like services best but going to try industrial estates. What do you like and do best

Services or Truck Stops , if a firm is too tight too pay for parking then its not worth working for , Industrial Estate if desperate (time wise ) and a Layby only if Mega Desperate , if they don’t pay parking for tramping I dont wanna know em, tight Gits can claim it back in tax anyway !!!.

I love this ‘claim it back in tax’ thing that drivers come out with! You think the tax man pays back the full parking amount?! Its simply a sum you’re not taxed on as its an expense. The government cant afford to pay an entire industries parking bill!

Totally agree all they can claim back is the vat if charged and and depending of what rate of the tax band the company is in that percentage will come off there final tax bill so if a basicly in my instance I park in truck stop a at 24 quid a night 4 quid of Tht is vat wich I get back leaving 20 quid to offset against my income tax @ 20% means I get four quid of my tax bill so basicly its cost me 16 quid so if your running a big firm wiv a lot if trucks Thts a lot of 16 quids a night

Shower and loo in t/stop or services or at last tip/loading point(lucky as most of ours have facilities) then prefer town centre lorry park or ind est within walk of pub and eatery or set back lay by’s well away from passing traffic again preferably with a hostelry within 5-30mins walk. Lazy Otter on the A10 for example or The Queens Head on the old A5 sth of Oswestry et etc. Loads of choice if you spare five mins to go looking.

I have always refused to park at services. Recently i have used laybys but the last 2 Sundays have seen me parking at the ferryport. Its nice to have a shower in the morning even if the lights are on a timer that i think deliberately cuts the lights when you are bollock naked. There is no sensor in the shower room so you have to go into the foyer to get them back on :imp:

Lolz

I don’t like services as it’s full of loud, thieving drivers!

Sorry to break it to you old bean but our travelling friends generally sleep and live in much better accommodation than any of us. Parking in services doesn’t make you any better, just makes you more tolerant of parking areas stinking of ■■■■, endless noise all night and second rate food. So I’d climb down off your high horse old chap, and pull in your puffed out chest, you’re no better than the rest of us, just more annoying and a bit more gullible.

Well, I think that sums that up nicely.

Them portable toilets that fold flat are a good idea,50quid ,there advertised in this months trucking ,and truck and driver magazine,

As MotH pointed out, parking costs aren’t refunded by HMRC, if the cost of parking reduces your profit by £20, then you don’t pay tax on that £20, I believe Corporation Tax is currently 19% so for me £3.80 of it would be refunded, reducing the cost to £16.20.

So 22 nights parking at £16.20 would come to £356.40 a month. I wouldn’t personally want to pay that much a month for parking because it would simply come straight out of whatever wage I can afford to pay myself- although a greater consideration is that I just prefer to park somewhere quiet, a few minutes walk from a decent chippy etc and nowhere near other trucks.

If I did employ drivers, and they did insist on parking at MSAs every night, then that would simply reduce the amount I could afford to pay them- where else would the money come from?

Conor:
Lots of dirty gopping gits here who seem happy not to bother getting a shower and who must be defecating in carrier bags and washing the wheels when they want a wizz.

It would appear we don’t share the utopia that you inhabit, because where you park up its obvious that when you awake in the night for a pee you stroll down your built in corridor to use the handy convenience whilst dressed in your night attire, No! My mistake.

I don’t do tramping but if I did I would never Park in an industrial estate or layby.

FFS a toilet is a basic human right

But as pointed out in the post above, even if you did park in the services, you are hardly likely to do a 400 yard round trip on foot at 3 a.m. in the ■■■■■■■ rain because you wake up needing a wizz.

Buy a thetford flusher if you feel that strongly, its not always possible to get somewhere that has all amenities, and sometimes those places lock up after a certain time , just saying!

True. Probably one of the many reasons why I don’t tramp.

And that’s fair enough. Tramping is either something you want to do, or you don’t. If you need hot and cold running water, mains electricity and sanitation, a freezer full of food etc then tramping isn’t for you.

Personally, I’ve been doing it for so long now that I just couldn’t contemplate living in a house ever again. Although I am planning to pack truck driving in next year, I’ll be living on a narrowboat where life will be broadly the same as it is now, limited supplies of water, no mains sanitation, no mains electricity. I just can’t hack staying in the same place for more than a day or two! :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t have a shiney motor. Am I doing something wrong. Can’t mind the last services or truckstop I parked in. I prefer solitude. The thought of parking with the likes of you makes my skin crawl.

+1
and add to that I drive a very well looked after 53 plate rigid and I am on a dam sight more than £7 an hour :unamused:
I am not a tramper but can do up to 3 nights out a week and if you use your head like has been stated above there is no reason to live like a minger with a mouldy chip on his shoulder

Very true. Just how did the lads cope doing the Middle East runs in the 80s eh Drift ? I mean there were not many Hollies cafés, Stockyards or MOTO Services around Turkey or Doha I guess.
I bet Connor would tell traffic to shove that scotch run up their arse considering there’s next to ■■■■ all facilities wise after Stirling services.

I’ve had a portabog strapped to the passenger seat for over 2 years now, and it’s more than paid for itself. I take it home at the weekend and empty it into my septic tank, swill it out and recharge with the appropriate chemicals, take it back on Sunday/Monday, and start again. Don’t have to worry about the previous user having peed all over the seat, always got bog roll, and no graffiti on the walls :unamused: . It’s fully sealed and held on with 2 straps so is as safe as you like. Having it means I don’t have to plan in advance, worry, or make myself “ill” holding it in. The bonus for me is having the moral high ground. When people talk about bottles of pee littering the countryside, human excrement on the ground, and MSA’s/layby’s etc reeking of pee, it ain’t me!!
