Seems to be a new craze at the minute does anyone know why it’s happening if they are not full of tossers on car share they are closed… Fantastic
They close some laybys so we can tip Chippings (Road surface dressing) for the Council and other Contractors
I got told it was because drivers decide to park in them all weekend and often days on end with no facility’s and then drive off leaving a mess behind.
I noticed last week that the one after Wentbridge services s/bound has been filled in. I reckon it’s got more to do with load and diesel thefts and instead of the police tackling the problem they’ve decided it’s much easier to move the problem away from their patch instead.

Wouldn’t happen if we had proper parking facilities for trucks that our foreign visitors thought were worth using.
Drive down the a2 or a20 near dover any evening to see what a woeful situation we have here. Trucks literally hanging out of laybys, every one full. If you were passing by and needed to stop you couldn’t, utter farce.
As far as I am concerned, if local authorities won’t invest in proper lorry parks then they have to deal with the inevitable consequences of truck drivers camping out in their laybys.
After spending a week in France, it really highlights the very poor facilities we have in this country!
And it is not funny

I heard it was a foreigner bogged down to his axles he was
It’s a total farce at the moment around Dover the A2 and the M2.
The amount of European orange squash bottles between Ashford and Dover is horrendous then we wonder why the local council don’t provide more adequate parking.
Even so there’s one layby between Dover and Ashford, there’s one on the old A20, but it’s still it needs sorting !

Who has to pay the local councils to provide it ? Why should it be free ?
Or should those who use it pay for it do drivers take night out money to increase their wages rather than pay to Park?
Just a thought

As far as I am concerned night out money is payment for the fact you are sleeping in a tin can. Parking should be paid on top.
I don’t expect councils to open up big free to use lorry parks, but it shouldnt cost anymore than a fiver to park in a spot overnight. Facilities would be pay as you go, quid for a shower etc. Toilets the only thing free, but locked and only accessible to people with a ticket from the pay & display machine.
Where do you/who do you show the pay and display ticket to access the toilets.
You now want ‘manned’ toilets ?
I don’t think a quid per shower would cover costs but I’m happy to be proven wrong.
I see in austria there is a move to charge for toilet usage at service areas (similar to on any rail station here) what are your thoughts on that or would it just lead to more dirty barstewards leaving bottles of truckers tizer everywhere. Do you think it’s right someone has to go round picking it up or do you not think of that ?

OMG! I saw many drivers throwing litter while driving… Will they start to close roads now?

No its non of the above, I’ve read it somewhere, but can’t remember the exact reasons or where I saw it.
Some laybys are being closed on an experimental basis for a period of time. (but that could relate to the A14?)
IIRC its to do with some don’t meet modern day safety requirements and there’s been a lot of accidents in the immediate vicinity.
Wasn’t there a case not long ago reported on here of a layby immediately before an off slip & a car driver had run under the back of a parked unlit lorry at speed in the dark thinking the layby (which would possibly also have green cats eyes across it)was the off slip?
A lot of HGV drivers are ignorant of the law - unless there is a physical divide between the carriageway and the parking area, the truck must be lit as its classed as part of the highway.
I was reading a highways agency pamphlet a couple of weeks ago, in connection with the proposed new A160 into immingham from the A180.
Closing all the laybys between the end of the M 180 to the off ramp for killingholme, is being considered.
All in the interest of elf n safety I think.
Perhaps someone who does night trunking will come along and say how difficult it is to find a spot in a lay by or even a service area for to take their break?

i am on a trunk tonight. I will not go in to charnock Richards at all. Lancaster is always full so i park at Walton summit on double yellows for a 45. I am there now on my way to Warrington after losing too much time around Coatbridge and the M74 closure. I should have made it in a 62 plate but not tonight. In a fleet truck its a double break trip, the 2nd break for me is annandale water on the kerb just after the coach park. Once the wagons are parked, its hard to find a spot to take a break unless you know where to pull in
And…Exactly why can we not have the same facilities as our european cousins have■■?

Many multi storey car parks these days issue you with a ticket/card when entering the car park which you keep hold of then use to pay when leaving. You could have a similar system where that card can also be used as a swipe pass into the toilets/showers. Everytime you access the shower it adds a quid or whatever onto your end bill. Toilets would be free - no different to a public toilet only its for lorry park users only. Such a system with automated barriers on entrance and exit would stop chancers and foreigners not bothering to pay.
Maybe a quid a go won’t cover the cost of the showers, it might have to be a bit more but at least its optional and the cost of actually parking the wagon isn’t extortionate.
