Law on obstructing vision in windscreen

As thread title says, what is it exactly and what is allowed.

I know the situation with dreamcatchers, trucktables etc.

The reason I ask is I saw a batch of new trucks fitted with outward and inward facing ‘incident cameras’ which were situated at the centre of the windscreen just above dashboard.
My motor has one fitted, but at top of windscreen in the centre, (which has the added bonus of the sun visor blocking the bit pointing at the driver)

I looked in the cab of one of these motors, and imo where it is situated it will be at some point in an overtaking procedure be blocking the view of a car in lane 1 as you are in lane 2.
I am sure this must be illegal, so what does the law actually say on this.

A truck won’t pass the MOT with anything affixed to the windscreen in the wiper sweep but other than that it’s a bit of a grey area.

As I understand the law anything in the wiper sweep is deemed to be illegal, we have small front facing cams at the bottom of the screen and at mot two dvsa types were arguing whether to fail it but couldn’t agree so they let it go

Something fixed to, or in front of the windscreen ‘could’ be considered to breach the Construction & Use Regs. I’m sure this will have been tested in court at some stage, but I can’t find anything on the public domain.

I wonder if the same could be said for frilly pelmets…? :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

How do you manage with toll boxes etc like the German toll collect transponder, for example?

Unless it is a “safety” item eg 90 kph limiter sticker etc

I always wondered about tax discs when we had them on cars, that was always within the wiper sweep on my car but it had to be there.

I have a dashcam mounted on my rear view mirror, both the mirror and the dashcam are within the swept area but it passed the MoT with the cam there. A local plod traffic cop said the would never issue a ticket unless the field of vision was substantially obstructed.
Having sat in the drivers seat of a traffic car I can understand why he would say that, his windscreen was cluttered with gadgets!

I knew somebody would suss me out. :unamused:
 Well since you asked I have had to take the pelmet down this week as motor is going in for MOT.
Took curtains down also for wash, so I will miss the tassels hitting against my head and face in the wind, making me pretend to myself that I still have hair. :sunglasses:
I’ll maybe even take a week on the sick with poofy curtain withdrawl symptoms.

At our place the boxes are removed from screen before test, and replaced after. Dunno if any have actually been failed, or simply not worth risking a fail.

Why would anybody decorate a cab to resemble an Indian restaurant or a tarts boudoir is beyond me, some look like a film set for the Moulin Rouge and I am expecting Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman to emerge from the cab singing a duet .
Spanish Matador bull fighting spears in a day cab cement mixer, ay, what’s that all about ?
As for dream catchers and pelmets.
Its their money .
A £120,000 tractor unit ruined with tat, do you see a new Porsche or Ferrari with furry dice in it or Wayne and Sharon stickers on top of the windscreen ?

■■■■ I was just about to order a sticker that had my name on it too…

I ordered my stickers " Dozy 1 Dozy 2 ".

Did this come from Tobys collection of standard posts, have you got them all saved for copying and pasting?

Tarts boudoir is just what I’m going for tobes. :sunglasses:
Don’t know about Ewen McGregor, but I’m up for an in cab duet with Nicole Kidman.
As for the Indian restaurant look, I could create that Eastern exotic ambiance with a sitar cd on, while warming up a Tesco jal frezi in my microwave, as a pre seduction technique.

Yeh, get me her no. tobes, I’ll give her a bell and see if she’ s up for it.

I’ve got to drive a wagon with all that frilly tat next week. Not looking forward to it.

One of these days fleets fitting dashcams will get smart and if they are permanently wired in they will get a weather sealed camera and fit it inside the grille.

Someone told me a week or two ago that I could buy a “leatherette dash cover” for about £80 for the CF I drive. I looked it up and it’s one of those hideous padded cell covers that Scania drivers like.
WTF would I want one for? I hate anything reflecting in the windscreen, especially garish tat like a “leatherette cover.”
A nameplate I can cope with.
