Lane Departure Warning System

Been driving a DAF lately that has been fitted with a lane departure system…has a small cam on screen and a warning buzzer (loud) together with a LED indicator on dash.

Basically if too close to a vehicle in front at a certain speed or whilst on cruise or vehicle starts to get close to edges of lane ( without indicator on) then the system starts making a high pitched beep.

Obvious downside is in contra flows where it doesn’t realize that you need to cross lanes without signal, but all in all really impressive. Know a couple of lads who would of benefitted from such a system and saved them waking up (luckily) down an embankment, and watching some drivers at night doing the shuffle side to side, they would obviously be a benefit.

Some will obviously see the system as a hindrance or annoyance but after first use I think it’s spot on.

Had the same system on a new Actros demonstrator we have along with the brake assist that slows you down as soon as you start getting too close to the vehicle in front.
I found it quite a novallty, some drivers do not,but at least if you don’t like it,you can switch it off!

When so many people die on our roads each year due to the general standard of driving, it’s impossible to argue against the introduction of this kind of technology. Gonna need more than a little bleep though and I predict it will stop working shortly after introduction.

Oops.

Marvellous idea, a warning when you drift because your watching a movie, playing games on the laptop or texting, brilliant, nothing worse than just sitting there steering, BORING!

I found this system really useful when getting to grips with lhd and active cruise control makes for a very relaxing drive.

Sounds like a good idea. After the last few mornings watching the night trunkers spend half their time on both hard shoulder and lane 1. Was getting scary at times.

Lane departure along with adaptive cruise control will be law in 2015 from what I have been told By manufacturers instructors

Strip out all of the safety devices & fit a 6" spike in the middle of the steering wheel pointed at the drivers throat.

Maybe then, the driver will think about driving !
