I could be talking out of my bottom here (wouldn’t be the first time) but wasn’t there a law change that said that a person had to hold that class of licence for a certain amount of time before they could “instruct” a learner driver?

To supervise a learner HGV driver you need to have held a licence of the appropriate category for at-least three years.

edit: I see the OP was driving artics about 30 years ago, so as Mike-C said the answer is “Yes” :smiley:
