Just like a book it has no back lighting.
You can get covers for the Kindle which have a built in light.
Thanks for that, I guess the wife will need to buy me a cover for Xmas as well then 
They are great if you like to read while away in the truck.
If you have an android you can download the app, not sure if its on iphone tho, not sure if that would use the backlighting off your phone, but i assume so.
