cracking thread, being only a youngster i can only echo dreva asking for more traction gb, and maybe inter city trucks?

Hullo,
Does anybody have any photos of the old Bowater lorries ? I can remember as a lad, just after the War, I lived at Bexleyheath and I used to see loads of them up and down the Rochester Way (A2). We used to stop playing in the middle of the road to wave at the drivers and let them pass. Beautiful Red 8 wheelers, with a trailer on. All neatly roped and sheeted.
Cheers, Archie.

hi dose any one remember t brady and son they had a depot at Northfleet in kent has any one photos .

Here are some photos taken at the Detling Steam Fair in 2005.

The Volvo was an import I think. The reg number is from the re-registered series.

The Scania was new to A&J Hirst

The Dennis was new as a gulley tanker to Canterbury Council

Heres a couple of Bowaters Archie, i remember them when we used to visit one half of the family who lived in Dulwich i dont remember to many of the six wheelers though but thet did stand out in that red colour with the deep side raves

Some from a firm i worked for in the mid 1960s two pre war AEC 3 way tipper, they had a six wheel tipper from the same time preserved but not seen it for a long time so i suppose its been tucked away somewhere. Much later came the Volvo F86 6 wheelers

Hullo Les,
Terrific pictures mate, they still look great don’t they ? The hours those older blokes must have spent washing and cleaning them, they always were in a spotless condition. Thank you.
Cheers, Archie.

Dave Lumsdens DAF 3300 with a heavy load at Dover Docks, Dave still has yard in kent now in the village of Appledore, The Commer is one of a fleet of both Commers and morris run by WC Blacklocks in Lydd, we never had much in the way of transport fleets on the Marsh and the Blacklocks vehicles probably numbered around 5 or 6 at any one time. i used to work for them on a Saturday morning down on the Chicken farm (Lyddite Chicks) but as can be seen the main work for the lorries was produce and hay/staw but other jobs were carried out such as this job transporting a helicopter at Lydd Airport

This old Atkinson rapier mobile crane stood and was used in the yard of Lydd welders

A long shot but, does anybody have a picture of the Foden S39 with Gardner 240 lump that Spencer King Contractors had from new in about 1973?
Spencer King was based at Lamberhurst Farm,Dargate and I worked there when I left school in 1972 and remember the Foden coming home with a new King tandem axle low-loader.It was driven by Keith Hadlow who lived (still lives) in Whitstable.

I used to go out as second man whenever I could with Keith,Spencer King had contracts on all the new motorway projects that were going on at the time, like the M25,M20 and M26.
Just wish I’d taken a camera with me :frowning:

any old photos of colin wild strood please.

Auto Renovations Scammell Crusader and AEC at the Medway Bridge site entrance

A interesting photo of the A20 at Larkfield i think mid to late 1940s, note A G Smith parked up on the right, I am sure someone will confirm but was there a transport cafe in amongst those buldings at the time
cheers
Les

Derek Linch blames reduced work and fuel prices for collapse
Roger Brown
Tuesday 15 March 2011 11:59
Kent-based Derek Linch Haulage has blamed the rising cost of fuel, as well as reduced work with a key customer, for its collapse into administration.

Director Derek Linch says the family-owned haulage firm, based in Romney Marsh, has ceased trading after 34 years.

According to Linch, the decision in September 2009 by the new owners of soft drinks manufacturer Silver Spring to switch a lot more of its transport operation to Jigsaw, combined with the rising price of fuel, were the key factors.

He says: “We are closing the doors at 5 o’clock today [14 March]. This is a very sad thing to have to do.”

Linch says the firm, which ran 20 trucks, will be put into administration and that 31 people, including drivers, workshop and admin staff, will lose their jobs.

“The industry is losing some great, well run companies like Joseph Rice, who are just finding that the rising cost of fuel is killing them. It’s becoming a very difficult industry to survive in.”

I realise I might start a riot but I always thought these Bowater AEC’s were the Numbest looking motors on the road(with sheeting and roping to match) I accept that when I first clapped eyes on them in the mid-sixties they were, even then, “long in the tooth” but IMO they were so pig ugly that only their mother could love them!!! Tin hat on back into the trench!!! Bewick.

This truck or a sister one to it, as I can’t remember the numbers,( letters are right) was bought by Staybright Windows of Coventry, in 1986, I know because I drove it for 2 years, we took the pod off the top in the end because it was a bugger in the wind, and fitted a sunroof. I bought that picture off ebay last month.
