kent transport

Thanks for the legends tag .Yes we used to do store delivers for M+S (BOC) in the 80s/90s UK/EU Christmas was a good time for me I used to load the turkeys out of EKP Faversham for the other depots alway had a M+S turkey or two in the freezer at home,They Never did work out our fridge had a side door and only sealed the back and no one counted them as the seal was always intact. And when Split died most of the drivers were wearing M+S suits at his funeral. Flocko

G,day all
As a new member i did a search for a thread on Kent transport but there appears to not be one dedicated to the subject only a few items that are spread all over the forum, so if you all agree i hope this start will unearth a lot more material. I have been collecting photos and info on kent transport for many years and include haulage, recovery, vans etc in my files i also include companies from east sussex when i can get hold of info. to start the first photo shows one of Colin Ashby late ergos threading its way through the narrow A259 at Dymchurch in the 1970s and a Transcontinental recovery much later on the Medway Bridge works complex, i may be wrong but has this truck something to do with A.I.D recovery

hi,
was that the same transcon that you could see a few years back from the motorway?if you were heading to and from dover?or wasn’t that one blue?
regards andrew

Hi Les, I remember Colin Ashby Transport being around for many years, and then suddenly it became ‘Daniel Ashby Transport’ and disappeared soon after.

Same can’t be said for the late Alan Firmin’s company, which appears to go from strength to strength.

Somewhere Andrew i have a photo of a blue Transconti, but like many things its never in the right place when you want it i will endeavour to hook it out. Meantime a couple more from the Kent stable this time from thr far north of the county Orpington and H Smith and co 1968 D series Ford low loader and and a later 1974 AEC Mandator.

Colin Ashby used to be seen a lot on Romney Marsh Bender i think serving a lot of the farm products i believe Daniel was the son but not sure why they disappeared, Two more for this morning, i like the real oldies and my interest stems back to the 1900s such as this Garrett undertype steam wagon owned by G.E Farrent from Tunbridge Wells and for comparison a later commer. In my early teens i worked for local Lydd block making company Pilcher and Tanner and every morning the road outside would be teeming with lorries waiting to get loaded including Farrent,■■■■■ fleet, Careys and a old guy from Dymchurch Joe Henley with his Thames trader Joe was a reqular at the yard and must have been on contract with Pilchers. Out of interest i note the thread on N.E companies has really taken off in a fairly short period of time so i hope the Kent thread will do the same. We may not have had the heavy industry in Kent be we were not short of transport companies or transport of all kinds and there were and still is some of them, so i hope this interest will blossom and contributions will be many Thanks

Just been having a nose around the threads and noted a couple of items on Alan Lock and the Whites. A few years ago Alan was kind enough to let me loose in his archive of photos and these two shots are of two of them and very nice to, if i remember Locks acted as agents for the trucks but sales were limited. Alans fleet was certainly varied over the years and i will share some of the images as the thread progesses

This photo was taken at some solvent recovery place at Rye Harbour.I went there myself way back in 1970 but this newer photo was taken by a mate of mine sometime in the early 90s I think, when his compressor packed in and one of Lock’s MANs blew the load off for him.

Locks are still going I think?

How about A & RJ Wood from Sittingbourne.

… Or maybe Hammonds, also from Sittingbourne.

Here’s one I finished last month

Good morning Les,
Just to let you know that transport is still alive and kicking on Romney Marsh, i remember the two models you made for us all those years ago, what fantastic trucks the Merc’s were for us (shame the ■■■■■■ nicked 5 of them over the years). Great idea to start a Kent haulage company thread, when i think of the companies that used to be around there’s not many left now.

Louis Reece were from Kent ,fruit importers, and Glass Glover Distribution bought them out in the early 80s IIRC.One of their drivers,Dave Pike, moved to Maltby from Kent and drove for Glass Glover.

Sorry,double post

Thanks for all the incoming items guys, love that artwork Jerry i must take a look at your website and good day to you Del. Yes i remember the models i have some photos in the files and intend to put them up soon and a few of the Mercs taken at the time, i remember taking a couple of shots of those two F88 the four wheeler and the six if i remember correctly they ended up us yard shunters. Mean time here are some old Kent recovery trucks the first is the ERF and Diamond T of Ken Dawes of Swanley, a second Diamnd T owned for many years by Syd Bishop from Orpinton and used to tow the mobile crusher inbetween rescue jobs she is now under restoration by DT man Tony Graves and a photo i took in the late 1960s of a Diamond T based at Western motors garage at Woodchurch, they also had depots at Chiselhurst and Dartford. I still ask myself the question why did i only take one photo and why did i not snap the Humber in front of the DT, if anyone has any photos of the truck it would be great to see them in this thread
cheers
