I remember when Rod Chapman was operating from behind the “Square Deal Cafe”, in Pembury on the hastings Road.

Hi Mark R, Just curious, I saw Fowler Welch swinging round the station roundabout in Sittingbourne last week with a new ? MAN…Not sure if you have any number of MAN trucks in the fleet. Are the Volvo’s still the preferred or are MAN being evaluated for the fleet ?

Good evening Ringrose…Yes, all the 59 reg Volvos have been replaced with MANs. However, i think most of them are based at our Spalding depot. Teynham are still 100% Volvo at the moment but the 60 reg vehicles will be replaced with Scanias in march/april. We also have an Iveco Stralis on long term demo. We also have some new 62reg DAFs at our Heywood Lancs depot. A mixed fleet to say the least!.

Got a few of these too…

Heres one from the archives…

Thanks Mark.Does that mean you giving up your Volvo too ? Is a Scania next for you ?
That spec of Merc does not inspire in the looks department (!) but your old Scania pictured, well,I still think the old Wood Teynham Coolchain livery is hard to beat.

Yes…i think mines going in the next couple of weeks. Will probebly be ‘homeless’ for a while until the new ones arrive. Although the Merc Axors are not everyones cup of tea, there actually a pretty good no frills workhorse. The MANs hav’nt gone down too well either to be honest. I think the drivers may have been spoiled by the Volvos.
I agree with you about the old Coolchain livery, they looked nice back then.

here is one of my first trucks when i got me class one

loved this truck pulled like a train mick gave me my start in haulage when i was 21 and wet behind the ears

scan0002.jpghere are some of my dads trucks he had as a owner driver

This is my F89 ex WhiteTrux motor ALP 61S … undergoing a resto by myself, not much to look at at the moment but its getting there , i think !

A few pictures of some of the companies i worked for

EH Nicholls from Sittingbourne. A long time ERF user, at the time that this article was written they had just taken some second hand Renaults. When ERF were no longer available Nicholls bought new Renaults. Good to say they are still in business with part of the Knauf contract, but now running Iveco’s.

I remember when Nicholls had a fleet of Guy Big Js. They were a regular sight around here with their flat trailers, usually loaded with paper reels all fully sheeted. When the Guys became unavailable they moved over to ERF B Series and stayed with ERFs until they too became unavailable!. Ive got loads of old Nicholls photos but sadly none of the Guys .They also had a few Fodens at one time too.

The Guys etc had all gone by the time I first knew this fleet. They did also have a number of ERF E16’s which were rare.

Merriworth Trailers produced a superb selection of brochures. Here is a Dartford Wharfage Guy, although the main focus is the trailer.

Anyone remember Tiffany Sharwoods" from Gillingham Business Park?, formerly “Tiffanys” - ran Mercedes Benz SK’s hired from Dawson Rentals or Twodrive Ltd, these are 1625s if my memory is correct.
The first one looks a bit scabby so probably a Daswon unit!

I think you,ll find FKK 585Y & FKK 586Y were ex Cartransport Ltd motors. They may have ended up on Tiffanys after Cartrans finished with them when they got their new fleet of 1625 drawbars which were on B plates.
