kent transport

The A&RJ Wood fridge is a great sight and needs to be preserved. That said, it looks to be valued by it’s present owner. Why is it there ?
I think it is the Teynham side, but Mark R will be able to confirm all.

You are right it does need to be preserved. There aren’t many period trailers that have been saved. Hopefully this one is secure.

Yes, the old trailer does look well dos’nt it. One of the directors of KCS (Roger Clark) is the son of Les Williams who was A&Rj Woods first driver. Les went on to be a director at Woods and is now in retirement.

What does KCS do, are they trailer repairs ? Always seems to be a fair few Stobarts in their yard…

hi ringrose yes kent curtain services . repairs, used them a lot on colin wilds back in the 90s. regards mick.

Many thanks Mick.

HI guys, I’ve got a few connections with Kent ,usually just passing through e/r Dover or Folkestone and Latterly to the Shuttle terminal . In 1970 I went to Stockers Transport in Maidstone to collect a 33’ Tandem York Trailer which my boss had purchased ( E Warner and Son of Tewkesbury Gloucestershire) .Using that same trailer and a Mk 5 AEC Mandator Unit I delivered a load of apple boxes to Adrian B Scripps ,Sherenden Fruit Farm ,Tudeley ,Nr Tonbridge . Apart from that and the occosional “Pull” on the M2/ A278 junction for a weight check on a Saturday I had little in common with Kent except loading from Unimills in Erith with bulk Soya Bean Meal where I would see the Bulkers of T.K Bonners/H.E Woodcock/A.Truder (Orpington)/Sturgeons & D. Salvatori to name just a few. In about 1990 or 1991, I sold my Volvo F88 reg YKX 859M to an owner driver from Paddock Wood named Lionel Larkin who in turn sold it to Barrio in Sittingbourne. When I sold it I had done a full refurb not long before & fitted roof rack, ladder, night heater & small chrome front grille. Imagine my dismay when I received a picture of what was my pride and joy via Email from a fellow member the “Steel Boys” as it lay forlorn and barely recognisable in a Hauliers Yard in Shropshire!! I hope this has evoked some memories for you Men of “THE GARDEN OF ENGLAND” Go steady Lads ! Regards Noel Minchew

Hi Noel…i remember YKX 859M. A friend of mine (Lee Breaker) drove it for Barrio’s. Ive also seen the photos of her in the field in Shropshire. I could,nt believe it when i saw it. Hopefully someone will be able to save it before its too late. I’m pretty sure ive got photos of it in Barrio livery, i’ll have to try and find them.

Hi Mark R, I believe that YKX has been sold to a buyer in the Crewe area with two other F88s presumably to make one out of the three .Let’s hope that YKX is the host vehicle and not one of the “donors” .I would have bought it had I known its whereabouts sooner! As it is I have purchased a superb example of a Renault 385ti Turboliner which I will be showing this year.Incidently the only way that I recognised YKX was by the stainless steel tank straps which I made and fitted .Most of the goodies (roof rack & ladder $ chrome grille) had been removed .Thank you for your response Mark and if you could find a picture of her in the Barrio livery I would be obliged as I saw it once on the M1 still in my livery and once in Barrio livery .You can either post it on here or Email it to me .Thanks and regards Noel

Ok Noel, i’ll see what i can do. Not many Renault Turboliners on the show circuit so i shall look out for you, will you be at Gaydon this year?.

Hi Mark R, Yes I will be at Gaydon with The Steel Boys entourage ,The Renault will not be refurbed by then but will be in " as bought " condition except for a few minor repairs . Just find the Steel Boys gathering and someone will point you in my direction ,I look forward to meeting you. First show will be Malvern on 16th March , Then probably AEC rally at Newark at he end of May ( have attended this since 2007 due to my involvement in the restoration of the William Gilder eight wheelers ) Hope to be at Welland at end of July then at Gaydon later in the year for the retro show. Best regards, Noel
