for a driver a complete waste of money and time,

for a company, a short cut to a very big fine and inquiry

Hi Deeireland,

How/why is this “handy” please?

Have just had at good look at it and it does seem crap ,as I said has anyone used it ?
Although a good app like that may be handy for a driver with no ADR experience that perhaps came across a fatal accident in the middle of nowhere maybe and also it could educate some drivers of the ADR codes etc maybe for emergency purposes.
At this job I believe anything that may make my job easy or save someone’s life or my own life is a handy thing to have.

Hi Deeireland,

I’ve never used it, but I wondered about the handiness of it for anybody on UK work, because UK domestic tanker journeys don’t use Kemler codes.

The best way for a person to know what type of danger is posed by a tanker’s cargo would be to look at the diamond-shaped UN Class placards. That way, there’s no need for an app or any knowledge of the Kemler codes, and it works for the UK tanker marking system too.

The Hazard Identification Number (HIN) [a.k.a. ‘Kemler’ number] isn’t aimed at communicating quite the same information as the UK’s Emergency Action Code (EAC) system, hence my advice to just look at the placards.

Thanks dave ,I have ADR tanks and packs but don’t use it maybe that’s a good thing lol

Seem to remember the fire brigade moaning about these codes when they were brought in to replace the old system.
Something to do with the code not indicating what action needed to be taken at an incident, meaning they would have to look up in a book before they could tackle it.
Sometime in the mid 90s.

Hi weeto,

Sorry mate, but the ‘Kemler’ system doesn’t replace the ‘old’ system.

The action taken by a UK fire-brigade at an incident that takes place on a UK journey is determined by the Emergencey Action Code (EAC.)
The EAC is a minimum of a number 1-4 plus a letter P-T or W-Z, which sometimes also has an additional letter “E.”
EACs are a feature of the UK method of marking UK registered road tankers for a national journey.

There are three conditions that need to be met in order that the UK system can be used.

  • The load is collected from a UK address
  • The load is delivered to a UK address
  • The load is carried by a UK registered vehicle.

If for any reason all three conditions can’t be complied with, then the vehicle must be marked the ADR way using the ‘Kemler’ marking system.

The ‘Kemler’ marking system uses Hazard Identification Numbers (HINs,) which are loosely besed on the UN danger Class numbering system and are used to better identify the type and severity of the danger posed by the load, rather than saying which actions need to be taken.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no grey area here because the circumstances that dictate the use of each system are very clear and distinct from each other, and there are no overlaps.

I use the dangerous goods manual app myself. Only so I know what’s in front of me on the hard shoulder when I stop. It gives me advance warning whether to stay or retreat as fast as I can!
