Keeping fit

As we’re all getting older the life that we live starts to take a toll on our bodies, now lorry driving and healthy living are not good bedfellows, especially driving over here, most of my days are spent driving down a straight road, I may change gears a few times, but for the majority of the time I’m sitting there lightly holding the steering wheel, there are no roundabouts or tight turns like we had in Europe, on vans or reefers we don’t have curtains to pull, straps to tighten etc, basically we’re couch potatoes.

We also have far too many bad choices available when it comes to eating, fast food or food from a box or tin from a Dennys or similar, none of it is any good for us, so I’ve started making a few changes, but I’m looking for ideas too.

I’ve started eating a lot more in the cab, salads, rice with chicken breast/tuna, that sort of thing, I’m spicing it up a bit with some sauces to make it more appetising, but it will become a bit boring, so any meal ideas anyone has will be more than welcome.

I’m also doing a bit of walking and some simple exercises I can do as I drive, but the walking part is difficult, apart from the extremes of weather, there are no pavements FFS, so I’ve come up with a little plan, I’ll park in a Walmart as far away from the entrance as possible, then once inside I’ll get a trolley, fill it with car batteries or jugs of water and walk up and down every aisle for half an hour or so, this is an all weather activity, now I’ve got to put the plan into action, that’s not as easy as it sounds, at the moment I plan my journeys around places that make me fat not fit.

I’m hoping we can all bounce ideas off each other, some of you may already have things that you do, so if you have, post them up, no matter how silly they may seem, it’s very hard to do do anything remotely healthy in this job, so silly or not, if they work, they’re not so silly.

One other thing, I’ve started going to a Chiropracter, I’m the World’s biggest cynic usually, but I was surprised by the whole thing, it really makes sense, it also stopped a pain I was suffering with, I kept getting pins and needles in my left hand, then it became a dull ache up my arm, it scared the merde out of me, I thought I was having a heart attack, I went to the Doctor, they sent me to the Hospital, they hooked me up to allsorts of machines and scared the remaining merde out of me, apart from being told to pack up smoking (next on my TTD list) they said I was fine, my BP was good and my heart rate was normal, so it was back to the Doc about the pain in my arm, it was waking me up at night it got that bad, the Doc said that it was nerve damage and I needed physio and if that didn’t work I’d need an operation, well how can I do physio when I can’t make appointments more than a few days in advance due to not knowing where I’m going to be from one week to the next. Long story short, my wife got a job with a Chiropracter, I looked into it and thought it made sense, three visits later and my arm is fine, the Doctors wanted to give me a prescription that would’ve stopped me driving trucks, maybe even operate, the Chiropracter moved a few bones in my neck and the pain has gone, there are a million other things that visiting a Chiropracter can do, so if you’ve any medical complaints, they’re well worth looking into

Are you the 20 stone bloke that was depicted by another ex-pat a few month back or was that a ■■■■-take by someone else? If it is you then a few tins of tuna, chicken and salad won’t make any ■■■■■■■ difference whatsoever. You’d need major exercise like brisk walking for an hour an day, eventually leading up to jogging/running which will see the pounds fall off you (nothing better than jogging for rapid losing weight, but it’s a ■■■■■■■ killer to do even if you do a lot of walking :open_mouth: ). Diet won’t make you lose any weight either if you sit on your arse all day not moving. Only time diet will make a difference is if you cut the portions right down to virtually nothing. If you think you can lose weight by sitting on your arse still but stuffing your fat face with salads and tuna and fruit instead of burgers, pies and chips then think again - it won’t do jack ■■■■.

These days I cycle 12 mile every day at a fairly brisk pace and also eat ultra healthy (porridge with honey or apple & orange chunks for brekkie or quaker oat crunchies with a light coating of brown sugar, piece of fruit or 2 for dindins and a big tuna/cheese salad for tea) and if I lose a couple of pound per week then it’s a good week :open_mouth: . As you can see, it’s easy to put it all on, but it’s a [zb] to get rid of it.

I’m not so much concerned with losing weight, I’ve got a bit of a belly, but a lot of that is down to posture and lack of stomach muscle to hold it all in  It’s not all bad though, I’ve got a cracking pair of ■■■■ :open_mouth:

No, my main reason for ditching the burgers is for overall health reasons, not to lose a few inches here and there, being a bit podgy is one thing, but being podgy and filling your body up with crap is another thing entirely, I’m starting from scratch really so a 12mile cycle ride would kill me, literally, but I’ve got to start somewhere, so walking around Walmart it is for now, I’ve been out for a two mile walk today, as you say Rob, that’s SFA, but until last week I had probably only walked two miles all year, two miles of walking between the truck and McDonalds, so it’s a start.

You recently started your keep fit and healthy campaign, so how did you build up to your current regime from stuffing your pie hole with pizza to where you are now?

I know your pain mark …i really do.
I hope that this change o life from OTR to redi mix will get me fitter as i know i have went to seed since middle age.
personally i carried home made meals rice etc and cooked them in my lunch box cooker so i did not eat some o that muck served up at husky/flying J…dafoe corner cafe of hwy16 nice healthy food if you chose so. :stuck_out_tongue:
Some of the places down south are well dicey for wondering about at :unamused:
B ut the one prob with my job is the socialising after work in the bar /work canteen . :frowning:
last yr i lost 2 stone in weight since coming of otr but sitting at home over winter it came back  :smiling_imp:
ps. i walk to work, only eat an apple ,a mars bar ,pack o rice crisps in cab incase o hunger pangs…during work…&bottled water…
jimmy.

Jimmy, quantity of food has never been my problem, irregular meal times, or worse, only eating once a day are my main problem as far as that goes, I’m not one for snacking, but I when I do I usually have a carton of Pistachios (peeled) bananas or a packet of Pretzels that I munch on, they’re healthyish snacks, I occasionally get the SlimFast or similar snack bars or drinks to snack on, I know they’re not the magic bullet, but they’re better than a hot dog or a burger.

I’m more concerned with my fitness levels really, but a good diet is important too

I’m surprised that didn’t kill you. Walking is something I do very little of and my feet ache like ■■■■ after 5-10 mins of walking. If you haven’t walked any distance for a long time then I can tell you from experience that you’ll wake up in the morning with your calf muscles aching like ■■■■ if you’ve done your 2 mile hike today.

Cycling isn’t any easier really. It’s easy to get lulled into thinking you’re doing work on your body because you’re moving along faster than you would if you were walking but it doesn’t work like that and you need to put the effort into the pedals and get yourself out of breath and your cardio up for it to do anything. Cycling is something you need to break yourself into slowly too, because I can GAR! you that your arse will hurt after the first time and it’ll be painful to sit on the saddle for a couple of days after. Also the first time you will find it really hard work - even if you just go along a flat canal tow path - but if you go every other day for a couple of weeks solid you’ll really start to notice it get much easier and less effort is required and/or you are able to ride faster = burning more calories.

You recently started your keep fit and healthy campaign, so how did you build up to your current regime from stuffing your pie hole with pizza to where you are now?

With a lot of willpower, but as you know, I didn’t really have much choice in the matter either. Like exercise, changing your diet to healthy stuff is not easy and if your willpower isn’t fully topped up then you’ll start to become bored of it and you’ll be snacking on the choccy bars and bacon butties again. What I tend to do is leave myself until I’m REALLY [zb] hungry then go and knock something together. When you get to that point in your hunger the “bored of salads” thing doesn’t get a look in because you’ll eat anything to fix your hunger. I’ve never partcularly enjoyed salads as they’ll never be as satisfying as a pepperoni pizza or paper full of fish n chips, but I started experimenting with different stuff to see what I could do to jazz them up. I now really enjoy salads since I discovered yellow peppers and I can’t eat a salad without them now. They are awesome and are just what they need to finish them off. I don’t like the taste of raw green, orange and red peppers but yellow ones are the bees knees   . You also get a huge difference in the taste if you buy from a good local greengrocer instead of the supermarkets. The stuff is much fresher and much cheaper too.

Fruit is something else I’ve never enjoyed too much, but then I discovered navel oranges. I don’t enjoy any other type of orange but these. I could actually eat these for brekkie, dinner and tea I love them that much. Only trouble with that is that the acid in them rots your tooth enamel and you’ll also spend most of your time sat on the throne   . And apples, never really took to them, but after trying different ones I found I really liked the Aussie Cripps Pink ones. They’re comparatively expensive to other varieties but the sweet taste is something else. I believe that they grow them in Canada in the summer so you might find them over there. We don’t have the climate for them here but they’re about half the price in the greengrocer than in the supermarkets.

It’s just a matter of finding out what good stuff you like. I thought that all fruit and veggies were bollox but I could quite happily become a vegetarian now if I wanted to. You will find fruit and veggies that you really enjoy, it’s just a matter of trying them all and seeing if you like them. But the biggest plus of healthy eating is, er, your health! Junk food makes you lethargic and want to sit on your arse all day doing nothing, preferably sleeping, and just generally feeling crappy. Fruit and veg makes you feel alive and want to do stuff and generally makes you feel quite happy about life. I was actually surprised just how different I felt after changing diet. I now WANT to get up in the mornings and do stuff whereas when I was scranning pizza, pop, ready meals and other junk I just wanted to sleep all day and my skin was horrible too.

Er, sorry for going on  . I reckon you’ve probably got the jist of it by now. But be warned, it’s a long old process and it’ll take months maybe years to see significant weight loss unless you go ■■■■■■■■ on the cardio workout. :open_mouth:

aye the one meal a day ,usually at evening was my biggy as well,

I used to have a bike that I mounted behind the back of the cab. Go for a pedal when your on your break or alternatively do a few laps of the Flying J. I tend to drink way too much coffee/tea as well… It’s probably a good idea to drink more water/fruit juice as an alternative. A lot of the problem could be psychological, driving gets tiring after a while and it’s easy to get in to bad habits. I now try to eat at the same time everyday and although that’s not always possible, I still feel better for it.

Rob, I’m not expecting miracles, but you’ve got to start somewhere, like you say, the benefits of eating decent food are much more than losing a few inches, it’s the other side of it that worries me, if I don’t do anything then the results are far quicker, it may take months to lose a few pounds, but it’s so easy to put them on

I’m in the perfect area for cycling, not a hill for hundreds of miles and it’s something that I used to really enjoy as a kid, the only trouble is the climate, it’s either snowing and -30c, then it rains for a few weeks, then it’s red hot and you get eaten alive by insects with big teeth, there’s a window of opportunity, but it’s very small, I’m also on the road all week, I’ve got nowhere to hang a bike on the truck, so walking round walmart is about the best I can come up with at the moment, eventually I hope to get in a gym a couple of times a week, I’m not ready for that yet, but it is part of the plan, not as hard to do as you’d think either, lots of big chain gyms in the USA, so a membership can get you into many different ones, I’ve just got to get past the point where putting my trainers on knackers me before I try to play with the big boys

My problem is that i eat a big meal when I get the chance because i dont now when the next one will be available. Then I get a chance to eat again before I nned to so I eat another meal because I dont now when I will get the chance again. Like thaat I eat far to much but am afraid of getting to hungry. of corse I eat the wrong things as well and cannot get organised with taking food with me. Does anybody else carry on like this?

Rico, I think we all do to some extent, it’s the lifestyle we have, if you work regular hours it’s easier, meal breaks are at a set time, you can pop to a gym on the way home, but look at all the fat unfit people who work regular hours, even though they have the ability to do it they don’t, in our case we often don’t have the ability so it’s even harder.

As Rob says, willpower is the number one factor, if you have it you can work wonders, without it you’re on a downhill journey to health problems.

I’m into this healthy thing right now, I’m driving everyone mad at home, I’ve been nicknamed Egon Ronay by nianiamh, now I’m on here about it, my reasons are that if I start to slack, sit on my arse and get on the pies again then everyone will give me a hard time, thereby encouraging me or forcing me into it through relentless ■■■■ taking

A great idea to eat Tuna as the exercise will do you good running away from Greenpeace supporters.

You have a choice, die from toxin poisoning and serious threats from Greenpeace or eat battered pollock and save the world :stuck_out_tongue:

Guinness is good for you

I’m a member of PETA Malc, People Eating Tasty Animals

… I kept getting pins and needles in my left hand, then it became a dull ache up my arm, … so it was back to the Doc about the pain in my arm, it was waking me up at night it got that bad, the Doc said that it was nerve damage …

I had an operation (cubital tunnel release) on both my elbows for something very similar to what you’ve described.

I did a little picture diary of it…

Diary of dieseldave's trip to the hospital carvery INC PICS! - HEALTH AND FAMILY (INTERACTIVE) - Trucknet UK

That’s what the doc told me Dave, Cubital Tunnel, hopefully the Chiropracter does the trick and I don’t need all the time off and the pain :sunglasses:

I decided a while back to try and get fit and lose a bit of weight.
Round here though the nice weather is about to close and we are moving
into the very sunny season. I have 3 dogs and they are plated to walk to 105 degrees.
After that the ground temp is too hot for there paws. When I’m home I try to walk four miles a day
or spend at least two hours a day in the gym. Unfortunately I am a slave to carbs, although
my efforts so far have got me down to a trim 25 stone or 350 Ibs US. :open_mouth:

Hi Mark, the main thing is you are aware you may be a little over weight.
I have battled it for years, when we met I was 228 lb, thankfully now back in work I am down to a comfortable 198lb. It took me a while, but its a matter of getting into a routine, of eating not just healthy foods but eating at the right time and smaller more frequent portions. Easier said than done when you are running long haul. You can start by stretching out and walking, when ever you are waiting to get loaded etc. I used to stop at DOT stations or rest areas, do a walk around inspection, and stretch out, 5/10 minutes 2/3 times a day works wonders, you will even find you sleep better.
If my body is aching, I visit my Chiropractor, and have adjustments done. Over the years of LTL and dock work I have had my fair share of injuries, and the chiropractor has worked wonders, my wife and daughter go before flu season, and a couple of times a year for adjustments and they swear by it.
As for the stomach muscles, perhaps a few more weekends at home are required lol.
Good luck with it.

Paul

Good post this mark, it’s a struggle the old pudding thing, I found over your manor having a soup & a salad for lunch helped me out, I actually lost a bit over there, I’ve piled a stone on in the last 6 months eating rubbish here. When I was on John manns I used Robeson round the perimeter of each truckstop before & after each meal which helps but not at sunbilla!! Your walmart things a good idea though as it’s weather friendly. I had a headache rack with my bike on over there which helped me. I do a couple of trails each weekend here on a MTbike which helps but in all honesty I’d kill circa job at home now, 25 years an od in October & 18 poxy stone!!! Good luck with it anyroad just off for supper in markham moor!!!

Ive been seeing a chiropractor too, had around 12 sessions after slipping on some wet grass after a 20 mile MTb ride up in Lancashire, I trapped a nerve in my back which was connected to my right bollock, you can imagine, yes I swear by them, even mrs sheet has been onfe or twice with a sore neck & she’s been sorted. £35 a session here what’s it costing your end■■?

I’m on a plan with the Chiropracter, Manitoba Health (the NHS) pay towards it, my company medical insurance pay a bit and I cough up the rest, it means that I can swing by every time I’m home and get adjusted, having the missus working there means I don’t have a problem getting lastminute.com appointments too which is good, as you all know, trying to fit things in around this job is a total PITA.

I’ve got a day off today, I dropped my trailer on a bay last night and I’m not loading until tomorrow, so as I’m just around the corner from Huntington Beach, California, I’m going to have a wander down there and do some bird watching, it’s already 24c and it’s only 9am, so between the temperature and the crumpet I should get a bit of a sweat on
