JWQ Transport

This is on the Dodge Trucks thread. You can see the original name on the curtains - Driven by Jack  I recovered it from Wiltshire after it rear ended a Tesco’s lorry.

Steve

I remember that old Dodge, Frankie Dunaway was the first driver of that lorry, then as you say Jack Spiers drove it for a long time.He ended up driving a Volvo 6 legger rigid with blue curtains towards the very end of JWQ, hope everyones well, Terry.

STOP PRESS I was in Reading the other day when I saw and chatted with Lorraine Randall!! She married a Sheerness driver called Robert Poppe aka “Poppe”, but they divorced and Lorraine re-married, as usual it was wonderful to catch up with any former member of “Q” squadron, she’s on Facebook if you wish to look Lorraine or “Poppe” up.

Brought to page 1 for mikeymike.

Anyone here remember my dad, John Lloyd, who worked for JWQ Swindon in late 1960’s early 70’s ? Bert Carvey was his brother in law.
Sadly, dad died in 1993 aged 57 from bladder cancer. I met Wally Bradford and a couple of other drivers at Bert Carvey’s funeral a few years back. When I was a nipper dad would take me on some of his trips (to Hirwaun) in an old Atkinson that used to jump out of gears whilst trundling uphill then he got a new AEC Dominator. He also sometimes drove the Noddy and a bull nosed Merc a couple of times.

didnt work for Q but i do know 9 to 5 clive from wroughton my brother in law was Irvin Rachael who drove for q in swindon ,do those names ring a bell with you ? Steve.

sorry for being an anorak chaps first point , m&t just folded and transport manager started BERKSHIRE HAUIAGE,he used to be a driver for them (shaggy), BOYZEE refererred to a accident if it was just over meadway bridge A2 the driver was killed around 1978, and for MARK R , it stood for jackson welby &quin, and the fitter WINDRUSH mentioned about the oil was it by chance DAVE ELVIN ?, BACK TO BED CHAPS

Yes the accident was around 1978 and it was just over the medway bridge,i didnt know the driver got killed i thought it was only the hitchhiker wo he gave a lift to,thanks for the info.

The Driver that got Killed was Charlie Churcher my Dad, he had picked up a couple of hikers, Dad swerved not to hit a car which had over taken him and ended up hitting the bridge support, one of the hikers had a broken back and the other a broken arm, unfortunately my world ended that day I lost my dad…I used to love going to work with him I am now a HGV driver myself… Alan

Evening all…just wondering if any off you have any photo’s of some of the old drivers which were based at Sheerness
My Dad Charlie Churcher worked there until his Death 1979…He was killed due to some ■■■■■■■■■ which caused dad to swerve out the way and unfortunately him hitting a bridge support which killed him out right, he had also a couple of hitch hikers which one had a broken back the other a broken arm…I remember some of dads work mates Micky Conroy Pilkey,Ray,I used to skive of school to go with dad he often didn’t know I was in the truck until I stuck my head up knowing I was miles away from school lol…Good old days! I am now a HGV Driver for my sin’s  Alan

Hi there Mike and everyone. I worked for J.W.Q. for the last five years of it’s existence and remember some of the names very well. I can’t believe “bomber” is dead, awful news. I think his real name was Keith and the last I heard of him he was working as a care taker in a school, great bloke, always friendly. The two Cheltenham lads were Tony Moxey and was it Martin ? I cant remember his surname though.I remember some of those names, “■■■■■” was a Reading driver and I’m in touch via Facebook-he now lives in New Zealand of all places and I’m going to see him next January on my annual holidays. Thing is Mike I just cant seem to place you, maybe you’d left-I worked for “Q” squadron from 85-90 but you might remember my Dad though, Pete Lewis. All the very best boys, Terry.

Hiya,Shakeysteve sent me this to put on the scrapbook thread but its better on here.Cheers Bubbs,

Hi I never worked for JWQ but I drove for Towmasters just along the road from there Queenborough Depot in Rushenden Road in 1977 to 1978, we all used to gather at the Merry Chest on the A2 for a chin wag. Does anybody remember the bad accident on the M2 near the River Medway Bridge when a Reel came lose due to heavy braking & crushed the cab killing either the driver or the passenger? I think the passenger was a lady delivery driver (on plates) working out of Sheerness Docks, the JWQ driver was giving her a lift from the Merry Chest. I not sure if I have got it all correct & would be interested if anybody knows more. Regards ■■■■ Matthew (Sittingbourne)
