Just what is enough to stop a vehicle entering service?

So basically, this might seem like an entirely stupid question  :open_mouth: but if I notice in the morning during my walk around that one of my indicators is fused/needs a new bulb (I have one on either side at the bottom of the lorry and one on either side at the top of the lorry) would I be able to take that vehicle out on the road as long as I have defected it and it will be fixed upon returning to base?

What if it had fused when I was out on duty and VOSA had stopped me?

All lights should be working on the vehicle otherwise you might find yourself having a chat with a member of the local Constabulary. If a light goes after you set off from the yard the situation is still the same. Showing documentary evidence of a standing defect before you took the vehicle out will not impress them.

I thought this was the case, so I was perfectly within my right to refuse to take it out.

Anyway, with the amount of cars around here with sidelights out etc it does make you wonder

At some point in your driving career you are very likey to hear the immortal words uttered by a gimlet-eyed traffic officer, “You’re supposed to be a professional driver…” and at this point he will be writing in his little book of naughty drivers, adding your name to his list! Consider the possibility of doing small jobs like changing a bulb yourself to try and keep the show on the road, if it’s not going to upset the apple cart.

As far as I am aware there are certain lights that are MANDATORY and MUST be working daytime or nightime - other lights don’t need to be working.

For indicators you must have one on the front & rear and a side repeater - they must flash amber.

From the OP’s description sounds like he has more indicators than he needs and still has a front, rear and a repeater. or am I reading it wrong?

Your point is a good one but he is just starting out and we should be encouraging him to do the job properly. If he went out with one light out and then another goes when he is on the road and he gets tugged, how is that going to look for him?
