John Latham

Whilst watching ITV1 last night from 10 to 11pm there was a true life crimes programe on. It was about the young woman who was shot and killed at her work place, Harvey Nicholls in London. There were a couple of interviews with her solicitor, who turned out to be John Latham. He is still very recogniseable as Lawyer John who drove for M&C Transport of Braintree for several years. He mostly ran to the M/E for astrans. Mervyn would keep turning him round in europe and he could be away for several months at a time. The last that i heard was that he had gone back to the legal profession in Oxford in the late eighties and now he turns up on the Tele

This was John relaxing with a book on one of his rare times in the yard at braintree with Brian Haley’s dog Ben. regards Jamie.

Hi Jamie, great to hear from you again.
As you know I had the pleasure of meeting John and running with him on a couple of occasions. If ever there was a Mr Nice Guy award for running to the Middle East then John would get my nomination.

B.T.W. that PM. that I sent you a couple of months ago inquiring about Dennis from Hick’s, well I have just posted a photo of him on the Roger Haywood thread, he is sat next to The Plater.
Best regard Steve.

Hi Steve, Dennis McGrath who is sitting next to Peter Wall in the photo.Died a couple of years ago. He drove for the Terrible Twins Hugh and George who traded as Middle East Direct or M/E overland from Port Talbot. He was a Gem of a guy and we had many great times together. He passed away quietly one evening whilst sitting in his armchair at home. R.I.P. Dennis
Regards Jamie.

Hi Jamie, sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.
My wife and I were very sorry to hear that Dennis has passed away, as we both had a really great day out with him once in Istanbul back in the 80s, like you said he was a Gem of a guy.
He did mention the Terrible twins, Hughie and George and Dennis told me that they were regulars of some working men’s club in the Port Talbot area. In fact they used to spend that much time in the club that they ran most of their business from there, from the payphone in the hallway.
Dennis said that the last time he went to see them, they had moved an armchair next to the payphone and George was shouting will you keep the noise down I am trying to use the phone here, into the bar. The thing was that the bar did quieten down a bit but Dennis wondered how long the club stewards would stand for it.
Does this sound like the same twins to you Jamie ?.
Best regards Steve.

Hi Jamie, There was a lawyer ( so he said) a very young chap working for OHS in the mid 70’s. He said he had a French wife. I met him in the Londra on the way down and asked him why he was watching the Turks so closely , he said he was listening to their language. We split I went to Saudi I m not sure where he went to but we met on the way back and he could the speak Turkish better than some of them. Would this be the same chap?
Also do you remember the stocky man who drove probably the last transcon for Wally Scrivener(nothing worked but the ignition &light switch) he could speak Swedish. Name maybe John.
I met him again in Codford cafe on the A36 between Warminster & Salisbury about 3 years ago driving a waste oil tanker.
Gavin

Hi Steve, the terrible twins George and Hugh McClennan, originally came from the scottish Highlands near Inverness. I cant remember what brought them down to Port Talbot, but they did spend a lot of time in the yacht club there. They also spent a lot of time in the East Cliffs hotel in Dover especially on the way out on a trip.

Hi Gavin, John Latham was in partnership with Egg on leggs(not to be confused with Kenny Bowkett who posted on here. RIP). But who was also called Kenny, he was the one who often took a young lad with him to do his paperwork as he couldnt get out and in the cab. They were based in or near Grimsby and fell out over missing money. John approached Mervyn King and asked him to take on his globetrotter and he would come and drive it, but mervyn declined and instead offered him a driving job and the rest is history. I dont think that he ever worked for OHS.
As for Wally’sdriver i think you may be thinking of Mel. ■■ who was an ex schoolteacher i believe, he worked for wally for a few years and then with Brian Halley. Regards Jamie.

Hi Jamie
What ever became of Wally ? His Transcons just seemed to disappear from the eastern scene.
