John derrick otterton limited

JD was my father and I am interested in trying to find any photos anyone might have of his small fleet ot lorries hauling grain around Otterton (he was a grain merchant) and to Exmouth Docks where he was picking up grain from the docks - I so well remember looking at the lorries in the yard at Otterton Mill and the suzy cables which fascinated me! I saw a mention of a post about him but could not find it -I am waiting for some pics from my sister from mum’s photo album which show a couple of lorries - I remember them all being washed saturday morning and lined up in theyard - he was very proud of all his team

Hi - that’s kind thank you - I know dad and one of his driving team restored an old lorry which they used to take to local agri shows and an old car and I have a photo of one of the drivers who helped and who was a great friend of dad - sadly his name escapes me - I shall try and upload photo in case anyone recognises him

Why is this thread on the Feedback Forum, and not on the Old Timers’ Forum?

I am sorry that would be my fault because I don’t know how to use the site properly. I do apologise

Your kind comments have made my day, thank you so much, I will suggest to still contact the local paper as all local newspapers have a vault of vintage and old photos that occasionally use to print a story, you never know what the reporters can dig out and they can run a story for you in the local paper.

The moderators may move it to the OTF.

Don’t worry about it - it’s not really a problem and if you’re new on here, no one will mind. It’s just that you’ll get a much wider audience in the Old Timer’s forum than in this backwater!

Another idea is writing or emailing to Gregory Distribution Ltd, they have several hundred lorries on the road nationwide with transport depots nationwide.

They started out in the West Country and I would suggest that some of the drivers still working for them may have known your Dad and his lorries.

Every month they write a regular newsletter and you never know they may print a story about your Dad and print the photos.

They have a transport depot in Exeter.

Thank you so much. Could you advise me how I should go to the right place and not upset people by using the wrong Forum?

On the main page of the website, there’s a section called old time lorries, companies and drivers forum, you definitely have not upset anyone.

Dear Stuart, thank you very much for your guidance. I will look there and ask the question again in case of any more information. I cannot thank you enough for your kindness. I have printed off the photograph of the lorry outside otterton mill and it will be in pride of place

No problem at all, I’m glad I was able to help out, come to think of it the Suzies on the back of cabs are quite odd, I think years ago the colours were much more brighter compared to modern lorries.

If you go to a shop that specialises in putting photos on a a tee shirt , they put the old photos on mugs and toasters, the round things on top of tables to put hot drinks on, they would make excellent presents for your family and an nice momento.
Or alternatively the shop could turn the photo in to a poster to put on the wall.
