Was out with my partner yesterday, sitting in the passenger seat so able to chill out and watch the scenery. Saw a sign up outside a freight yard saying HGV Drivers wanted. Not sure which company it is in there, but for those in this part of the world (South Staffs) it is the container place off the Eastern Way in Cannock. It has Pentalver on the entrance road but am fairly certain there is more than one company that operate out of there.
Was saying to my partner how rare it was to see any sort of vacancy sign these days, then two minutes later going past the new APC hub in Cannock I saw a poster attached to a lamp post saying HGV drivers wanted. Don’t know who that was for, but it right by the hub.
They say the first signs of recovery are when goods start moving around again. This downturn has gone on way too long already…
Agencies are popping those signs up everywhere, so i can say its not a company advertising. and a lot of agencies advertise jobs they dont actually have in order to have you on the books and on call when things do get busy so they don’t miss out on work to other agencies. they are like price comparison sites, they all keep popping up promising more than their rivals but when push comes to shove, they suddenly don’t answer the phone or have to call you back and forget your number.
Thats not to say all agencies are like that, i actually have worked for one who was honest and reliable. granted they were only one agency compared to the other 10-12 i was with also so they gained my respect because they respected me.
The one on the lamp post by the APC hub is almost certainly an agency one, but the one at the container place is a proper wooden vacancy board with no phone number, so it an ‘apply within’ proper vacancy.
Most agencies in this part of the world are a complete waste of space, with more of the brown stuff coming out their mouths, than truth… The only agency contracts that are worthwhile are managed services, where they have a permanent presence on the actual premises of the larger clients.
Its good to know this stuff should any of us permanent company drivers either feel the need to move out onto agency or are forced to do agency work.
It would be great to have a “what to look for and ask about” in agency recruitment, just a thought

Easy, they are thieving criminal scum who have played no small part in ruining the industry and should be avoided like the bubonic plague.
Noticing that sign did me one favour though, as I found out Pentalver are also an approved dcpc training provider. Rather do it from someone ‘in the trade’ than through some purely office based organisation.
