Who are they what are they about
Eddie Stobart now mate
Run for profit not for drivers and chock full of health and safety rules and a mountain of paperwork before you even turn the engine on
You do get ya own parking spaces at Rugby! Which is a bonus!

Thats one way of looking at it,
I know a lot of H&S and paperwork is a pain in the ■■■■ and usually irrelevant, but do you think in this case it may be in the drivers interests, to follow them and not be run into the ground or engaged in cowboy practices, therefore happier safer drivers = greater profits may be the medium term.

Hey Speedy, you could be a transport manager?

i doubt form filling and stuff is in drivers best interests. Wincanton must make drivers fill in more than anyone and they still ask you to unload on double yellows in busy traffic. And if you are running short of hours and you warn them they will rather you run out and pick you up
before letting you return. Safer?
Speedy , here was a time when you’d get your delivery/collection notes, check your load, oil, water, tyres etc. and get going
But then that was in a time when truck drivers were treated as truck drivers and long before office jerks got their heads firmley embedded up their own arses and started to prouce ALL the unecessary and meaningless paperwork
Have you had enough break, have you satisfied the law, when was your last daily rest, when was your last weekly rest, what is the service week, what is the MOT date, blah blah bleeding blah
And no i don’t think it helps in the slightest; and if you do, then i can only assume you are either very young or pretty new to trucking my freind and i feel sorry for you for missing out on the time when this was a proper job and your boss treated you like an adult

I doubt is there’s a haulage company (or any other company) in the land that puts it’s drivers before a profit
As for paperwork, not a fan of it but if it has to be done for the little darlings then so be it.

Forgive me if this sounds unkind…
I would respectfully suggest that if you’re going to view the past through rose-tinted glasses you get them checked for optical correctness!
Proper job? No tachos so you ran all the hours God sends, in noisy, cramped, unheated cabs, roping and sheeting, the only PPE was an old donkey jacket and a greasy flat cap, two weeks holiday a year if you were lucky, and likely dead before you’re 70 because your body won’t take any more.
Yes I agree the paperwork today is a PITA, office bods are no different now to what they were then only they can ring you 24/7 instead of you having to stand in a freezing cold call-box,it is a bind not being able to run the job yourself like you used to be able to. I listen to the same BS from railway enthusiasts who try to tell me that it was better when we had steam engines!
Yep, I’ll take a proper job like that… nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be is it?
cheeky sod, I’m not that old
All the trucks i’ve driven have had night heaters in and were quite modern
No no mate I meant the paperwork and H&S is far too much
As far as running bent, I think you’ll find we had much more ‘down time’ than today, we used to spend hours if not days (and more) waiting for customs clearance, check out some of the old photo’s, funny there’s none from recent years of drivers chilling out and having a laugh isn’t it
That’s because the ‘non’ transport people inolved now know only about making money for the company so have us all running so ‘efficiantly’ we are all go go go
By the way, take a good look at most of the H&S and see how much is there to protect you and how much is designed to protect your boss from litigation

That is spot on…its all ‘we’ve covered our arse’ paperwork and nothing to do with our saftey.
only they can ring you 24/7
errr… no they can’t.
After hours of work,it is an offence to ring you when you are not at work, and if they do,they need your permission.I would think the only exception, may be emergencies or agencies,of which I work for one,and it would obviously be in your interest to be contactable,or the loss of work would mean lack of cash.
When I used to do nights out,as soon as that engine stopped, the cab phone went off,and when I put my card in the following day,the phone went back on,and if they dared to ring my personal number, they got very short shrift.
Sometimes you would get, ‘We’ve been trying to contact you since blah blah,’ to which I replied, ‘When I clock off, that’s my time, not company time, and now I’m at work,we can communicate,so what was so urgent?’
Or another classic would be to say to the traffic monkey, ‘Would you mind if I ring you after work, when you’re at home,to discuss work?’ and it was amazing how many would say that they would be going out.
What’s sauce for the goose,is sauce for the gander.
Ken.

Your assumption is great, i wish it was true
, i try not to assume anything anymore due to the anagram within it
,
Sadly i hit 40 yesterday which is not too young i feel , and i’m not new to trucking, i’m old to trucking and pretty much said bye bye to trucking after 15 years as an o/d.
The next post is probably why.

That’s pretty much why i ain’t truckin anymore but i think that applies to pretty much everything nowadays.
And as for bullitt’s comment i could be your transport manager if you wish i have all the PAPERWORK necessary.
I don’t think a lot of truckies would work for me though because i would want them to work reasonable hours, have a reasonable wage,to be respected and treated well and have a good work life balance. Seems like the good old diehard prehistoric truckies don’t want the above though.
I always found treating people well and with respect worked to get the best out of them, maybe i was/am too far ahead of my time for the trucking industry, therefore i only play on the edge of it now
I thank you
