If you could that would be great have you had any photos off Matthew Pratt I understand he was going to do a book about ashworths and got quite a few pics to use shame he never did it

Another great picture , i wonder if ashy “meddled” with the volvos like he did with the AECs

I,ve yet to go and see mathew it,s on my to doo list, a winter job i think, theres a lot more to this book writing than meets the eye though time is the most important thing .I have several good shots of big j ,s loaded with wool but i,m keeping them for the book one loaded with 96 botany,s gun shot and rolling .

My dad always said Ashy himself could make AECs better than AEC could , they reckon he put an header tank behind the cab well before AEC did , maybe a tall story maybe not

What about the tale of jack ashworth cutting a brand new aec mercury it two in order to lengthen it to get an extra tractor on ,this was done while the rep was in the office picking up the cheque .some or all of this could be true?

i heard a tale of a driver going to see him and saying his wage packet was a pound short ,so he just opened another drivers pay packet and took a pound out of it and resealed it ,the driver said well hes short now ,ashy replied ,therell be 1 idiot that wont say anything!!!

Re: peterq5422 the photo of 2 ashworth wagons, yes it is Jack Wood on the right with the F12 which he had from new before that he had F89. and a new F88 290’s. Jack worked for Ashworths in late 50’s and returned early 70’s up to Ashworths finishing then came to Molly Bebbs with me, I think your dad must have guessed who I am by now - didn’t work at Ashworths but I would like to join in at the reunion if no one objects. I do know a lot of the old drivers and would like to catch up with them.

Youngdave just turn up mate it is going to be a good night and if you have any photos bring them too please see you there

youngdave didnt know jack drove the f89 before the f12 i thought wally had that one i remember him fitting airhorns to the 89 but connecting them somehow to the deadman but everytime he pulled the chain the brakes locked on he was in ventnor street garage trying to sort it out a little embarrassed wally also bought a fullset of chrome trims when ashworths bought the three f 10s he was that sure he was getting one but alas he had to sell them i think to dennis robson as he just kept the 89 as well as dennis robson derek grice and dennis stansfield got the new ones nub 98,99 and 100 v

Thank you peter for the invite. Your answer to Jack getting the F89. When he started at Ashworths in the early 70s he drove the V8 Mandator for at least 18 mths to my knowledge and then he got a new F88 290 along with a few others and started doing continental work up to ashworth buying the second hand F89 from Crossroads which he drove for approx 2yrs befor falling ill with Jaundice and was off work for a while on return he worked in the garage at Ventnor street for a while up to getting the F12.
As for photos Jack had an album full of photos which disappeared after he passed away

Thanks for the info I will let dad know your coming and look forward to meeting you

Re Scud You are correct about Ashworth cutting a new motor in half but to my knowledge it was a Commer TS3 which Arthur Sansome drove from new
