Depends on the agency/company, if it’s ADS I wouldn’t touch it on days with a barge pole, mainly because I don’t like working for up-to 15 hours and getting paid for 11 hours :unamused:

I’d say the job itself is OK if you’re on for a firm that pays by the hour.

I do it from up this way. I usually take parts from local suppliers (located within the jaguar plant) to the landrover plant then return empty stillages. I’ll guess that you’d be travelling to suppliers for parts and returning them into the plant or one of the distribution warehouses local to the plant. Usually all curtainside work.

Sorry I should have said this in my first post

If the work is out of JLR at Solihull it will be curtain-sider work delivering and collecting to/from distributors and suppliers, It’s a DHL contract, the people are OK apart from one fat [zb] in transport and he’s only a prick when he’s having a bad day, but you probably wont be in the office for long anyway

The runs tend to be varied, which some people including myself prefer to going to the same places every day, If you’re going to be going to JLR regularly ask in the transport office for a map of the premises, it’s quite a big place and it can be hard to find some of the decks without a map, actually your company may have some maps of JLR but if not JLR have.

The one thing I didn’t like about the place when I started there (apart from the way we got paid) was the fact that you have to phone in all the time but you get used to it, you have to phone in when you leave JLR to start your run and every time you get to a drop and again when you leave the drop, I used to phone in when I left the places and tell them what time I got there, I don’t think they always liked it but nothing was ever said

Hope you enjoy your new work

Avoid Lawford Heath, they are the most obnoxious people on the planet, well the security men are. DK Packaging, Land Rover and a chemical factory, you will be lucky to get on site this side of Christmas :stuck_out_tongue:

Used to do it when I was on for Edwards Logistics/Willy-Bitz in Belgium.
Most of it was okay,we ran from France,Germany,Holland and Belgium to Coventry (until they closed it),Solihull,Castle Bromwich and Halewood.
We also did the engines for Aston Martin from Koln to Wellesbourne.

Then we started running more and more to Solihull, which was an absolute pain,no parking (or waiting) on the approach road to NYK and the clampers would try and stick a clamp on you if weren’t sharp and moved on!
Arrive early, and they’d send you off and tell you to come back in 20mins.Arrive late, and they’d send you off and tell you to phone your office for a new booking, even though they were waiting for the stuff!
Castle Brom was never any problem (good canteen, good breakfast) as was Halewood, good lads at Halewood.
The Land-Rover plant itself was okay,it was just the NYK depot, especially the morons on the gate.

Expect to drive around Land Rover for a few hours “looking for an empty trailer”.

cheers all for clueing me up a bit

No, howells transport start monday

Just wanted to emphasise how big Solihul is: Try to ask in your office, or a fellow driver, how to find the deck you want. The numbering system has no logic to start with; It changed a few years ago but loads of suppliers still address to the old numbers and a lot of stuff is addressed to the wrong deck anyway.

The only guys who can give you directions are the gate men - The workers on site don’t have a clue. Write down any gate code you may be given.

Unlike the old days you will find most of the FLT drivers helpful - they are experts at what they do and will not put you wrong - just be patient if there is a queue. When you arrive at a deck ask where to report - the GI office is often well hidden.

Be prepared for a token search on the way out.

Seriously?

Howells have landed a decent contract? Can’t see it lasting long!

I remember when there was an agency operating out of Howells yard doing that work…did Howells steal it off them or have they joined forces?

The drivers for the agencies were idiots…used to keep blocking our trucks in, and there was never anyone around to shift them…but then Howells didn’t really want us in their yard.
Best thing Elite ever did was leaving there…

Interesting…when that “agency” moved into Howells offices, with the Land Rover work, they supposedly had nothing to do with Howells, they were just renting the office and the yard to store the ridiculous amount of units.

Wonder if that was actually true, or whether it was just a ploy by Howells to force Elite out quicker…we did wonder why their drivers seemed determined to park the units in such way as to cause maximum problems when we wanted to get out on Monday mornings, or when we ran back in on Sat mornings.

Elite are a container transport firm who used to rent space in Howells yard, now moved to Landor St. Howells really didn’t like us, at all.

Had a major blow up when he discovered that, shock horror, drivers were actually using their sleeper cabs to sleep in (some of us lived a fair way from the yard, so for the odd night back at the yard more cost effective to sleep in the truck than burn petrol)…apparently it was a “security risk”, in case someone broke in to the yard and attacked the drivers?
So we had to drop trailers in the yard then park the unit out on the street if we wanted to night out there! How that was any safer i’m not quite sure?

We did have a couple of incidents where only the Elite trucks got smashed up and broken into…none of his trucks got touched, nor did any of the other vehicles stored in there…just 4 or 5 of our trucks. Funny that…?

If you fancy container work, could do worse than giving Elite a bell…decent kit, well specced, not too bad to work for.

How long ago was this, ADS used to have an office above Howells and park their or should I say DHLs units in Howells yard.

I think ADS moved last year.

Would have been 2010.
