I must say that these are fantastic photos of JR Adams and this is an interesting thread, although I’ve lived and studied in Newcastle Upon Tyne (a fantastic place) for a couple of years I never paid much attention to it’s hauliers, the only hauliers I was aware of from Newcastle were:-
Waugh Road Services
Murray Hogg
Thompsons of Prudhoe
Fergusons
Marsden Road Services of Wallsend
Van Hee

However until recent years I had never heard of JR Adams and Simpsons.

Down South Wales somewhere, A wagon came round a bend & smacked straight into him, his pal Paul was behind him, & got straight to him, he was airlifted to hospital, but he is ok , bruised & shaken up but he will be back to work as soon as he is fit again, Regards Larry.

While I accept that those sheets and ropes are very neatly stowed and appear safe Larry,I never liked to see ropes hanging/dangling about the back of the cabs !Just prior to us taking over K. Fells in '76 one of their motors set off south from Watford gap services, there was also a “Plate” driver in the cab hitching a lift.So the artic gets steam up when all of a sudden the driver ( the late Don Chaplow) loses control and takes out 100 yards of centre Armco barrier. As the artic came to a stop in the middle of the central reservation, out jumps the “Plater” and legs it off down the hard shoulder,so when the Law turns up and asked if there were any witnesses, the driver says yes! but the geezer’s done a runner down the hard shoulder !!! Apparently a dangling rope from the back of the cab got wrapped around the prop and ripped it off along with some other pipe work.Funny at the time because no one was injured, but it could have been fatal !! Cheers Dennis.PS IIRC our driver reckons the plater had ■■■■ himself by the way he was hopping and running away from the scene !!!

I agree with you Dennis on that score, but it seems to be the done thing theses days, in my younger days we used to put them in the cab to keep them dry, but of course the were sisal ones then, I did have an 8 wheeler with a box on for my chains & Waricks so it was handy for the smelly ropes when they were wet, Regards Larry.

The driver of my 2nd motor,a Mastiff artic, started for me from another local firm where he’d been driving an Atki 8 wheel flat and he’d had a box on the chassis side for all his gear and spare rope so he asked if he could have similar on the Primrose trailer so I got the painter/bodyshop to fix one.Visible here on the shot. When I was on the 8 wheeler and trailer all the ropes were stowed under the 7 sheets that were rolled up like cigars then they were all covered with a little bit of sheet to keep them dry.If they needed drying we tied them onto the back of the head board.I myself always carried the ropes on the passenger side floor of my D1000,nowt like the good whiff of sisal/hemp drying out with the heater blowing on them !! happy days Cheers Dennis.
