Only just joined this forum, what a great place to be. It was reading this post about JR Adams that brought back some great memories.
During the sixties I worked as a joiner at Vickers Armstrong, and as part of my job was to secure metal type loads onto trailers/flatbeds I was always working on Adams,s lorries. One day there was a ships engine crankcase to be secured on an 8 wheel Scammel at the steel foundry ( approx opposite where Patterson Ford are now)…, we used to use 9 by 3 wood chocks all around the base fastened with 6 inch nails, it was hard graft nailing all those chocks, (hardwood beds) but one time I made it harder. Once I had all the chocks placed I started nailing, seemed harder than usual, untill I discovered I was actually nailing through the rear mudguard good job I checked to see as the nail would have ripped through the tyre. The drivers name I remember was Joe Bell the hardest little bloke I ever met, he could literally fall off the trailer, get up dust himself down and just get on with it, he also liked a good mickey take and a joke, he was bald headed except for some ginger hair at the sides. His head always had some battle scars ( Great bloke ).
It always made me laugh when any of the Adams drivers came in for a load to go to the smoke as when they reached their “drop” they got a quid tip ! how times have changed eh ?
Incidentally while I,m on has anyone any info on the Greenside quarries which originally started off as Braithwaites and in later years 63 onward was known as Lime Sand & Mortar. I spent some very happy days going with the wagons ( as we used to say) and got to know some very special people, special in that the tipper drivers there were the salt of the earth, two in particular Ken Williams ( sadly gone now) and Alex Martin ( Sandy to all who new him) and still going strong, also “■■■■” Richard Shotten who always had his young son Richard with him, and " Butcher" Mead…, happy days !
Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this
Have a look at some earlier posts on North East Hauliers, there is some Mk 5 8 wheeler Tippers in Braithwaites livery, They belonged to Smiles fo Miles Blucher, Regards Larry.
