LOL …Yes the Rover looks very much like the one Roger used to drive !
The Cortina looks very similar to my Grandads, but more ‘gold’ !
I’m sure I have pics of both somewhere…
Stu
Would that be LRT 9

Hi Steve. Yes you are correct it was Heywood and Croda were on Falcon Street off Ashton Road like you say.
Hi Malc if you are allowed (I know it was a sore subject with one of the Townson family earlier on) any chance you can put some of your photos on here I wouldn’t think you will have a problem with Janet or Michelle in doing so.
John. I will put what I have on a new thread under the Woodbrow name, we have just been sharing a few new ones after getting back in touch with an old driver. Some of them have not been seen before and Janet has had a look. I am hoping to meet up with them later this year when the weather is better.

Early in 2010 i was thinking of buiding a J.L Townson dedicated website like my W & J Riding site but was contacted by a member of the family and told in no uncertain terms that they did not want details of their old company broadcast on the internet so that was that!!!
Here’s one of many i have of Woodbrow not sure were it came from, but if anyone wants it removed and it will be and then added to the official secrets batch of pictures.
Below is a picture taken by my friend Jack Kershaw of the F88 he used to drive for Townsons
Its parked up on the A672 at Denshaw.
moomoo. That one was from Michelle and was driven by an ex Heatons man called Eddie Stockley, the tank was the only IMO1 tank we had and was a two potter. I will add it to the Woodbrow thread
Stanfield:
You mean these ones Trevor0
hello john , yes those are the ones i meant , how come those seddons were registered in Rochdale ? thank you for providing that lovely old picture Trevor .
tastrucker …
If I remember rightly … in the old times, the vehicle got a ‘plate’ based on where it was first registered. Oldham used to be ‘BU’ , but if Townsons bought a truck in Rochdale, then that would account for the plate as it would have been done at the local office.
Nowadays, all the DVLA offices are combined and you can’'t tell where a vehicle comes from … which is a shame sometimes !

Hi Trevor. This was the only Foden they had apart from the micky mouse cabbed breakdown truck. A lad called Keith Appleby drove NFU632M for a while (not sure if thats him in the photo) and Mick Milburn drove the Volvo PBU310R which is also in the photo from new.

Spot on Stu and I am now certain that the driver in the photo is indeed Keith Appleby who was involved in a very bad accident years ago and I dont think he ever drove lorries again.I remember him coming to the Morecambe depot a few times when he was well enough to visit myself and Harold.
Stanfield:
Like these two below you mean Stuart and yes he had the Allegro when he 1st went to Oldham,a lot of the company cars at the time came from Esso T/park , Townsons used to supply the Esso Managers and reps with cars and when they returned them they used to put them on the notice board for the drivers to buy if they wanted and quite a few did.10
Roger Townson had a metalic blue Rover 3500 sd1 reg number 9 LRT also a Range Rover VCW950V along with many more before these. The company had many cars/vans on Esso contracts around the UK .The Cortina Harold had was a 2000- ghia ex fleet engineer Esso mode wheel gifted to him on retirement.
Harold was the longest serving employee of J L Townson but not the first by a longway
Stanfield:
The only Scania Townson had in there fleet.until Sadlers came along in 1980.0
Dont know who the photo belongs to so I hope they dont mind me showing it on here.
On the takeover of J L Randall 2 Scania 80 came into the J L Townson fleet

We have been contacted by someone from the family who disputes this, the message was :-
“This is a incorrect statement by the poster,he did make contact but did not get a reply”
Anyone work for these or have any pics? My Mums uncle used to drive for them years ago.He also drove for Harrisons i think it was.
Al
