Ok: good detective work again! Robert

Is there a thread on the site for J&H? I read in this Saturdays Daily Mail ( it wouldn’t have been in Johnnies Daily Star!)that some former employee’s of J&H were trying to organise a re-union of anyone that was connected to the firm.I’m sure that a well known outfit like J&H would have the makings of an interesting thread!Cheers Bewick.

Obviously there dosen’t appear to be either much interest or knowledge on the site ,regarding J&H which is a pity but never mind! Not every bore hole strikes oil!!! My interest in J&H go’s back to the time when I started running up and down to London with my first motor and for the return trip I used to pick up all kinds of bits from a number of hauliers/clearing houses and one of the places I used to collect from(always the last call) was at J&H’s Packhorse Garage at Markyate. The then depot manager was a bloke called Edwards who went on to form ECE Transport a while after. The only problem I had with the notorious J&H was I had to call in person at their HO in Peckham to periodically collect a payment as they had a distinct aversion to “coughing” volantarily!!! I always got a cheque but it was like pulling teeth without anesthetic!! In later years their Coventry depot manager,R.C.Halliday left and started on his own, initially taking over a large “slug” of Massey Fergusson traffic.Bubbs has just put a fine shot of a J&H AEC and 4-in-line van on to his thread, thanks for that Marcus you are a “star” my son!!! Cheers Dennis.

I remember J & H at Coventry loaded there many times, can’t remember the 2 fitters names, they were cracking blokes, we seemed to do a lot of 20ft containers loaded at Masseys for Felixstowe, when I did a bit for A C Jones from Cubbington. Halliday’s place was on the A45 I think up past Bob’s cafe where Applins were.

There we are,it’s just a matter of waiting while the “brain cells” starts grinding and the posts start appearing, well done DD6!! Bewick.

IIRC this shot was taken in the Packhorse depot at Markyate where I used to pick up small consigements for Kendal, mainly wooden cases holding 2 one gallon flaggons of Shweppes cordial. It was for a bloke in Kendal who used to fill those little plastic containers you bought in the Picture house,he supplied all the cinemas in ■■■■■■■■■■ and Westmorland at the time .He was always “screaming” for his gear as J & H just sat on it until I turned up!!! Cheers Dennis.

Hello Dennis, was there a connection with BFI in later years or am I mistaken? Regards Haddy.

i put this on here about 6 weeks ago and there were no replys :

Are you saying that J & H became part of the HTS group ,or have I got the wrong end of the stick? Ralph certainly made a splash in the early 70s,was HTS quoted on the stock market before they finished or didn’t they get that far? Dead interesting this thread isn’t it! Cheers Dennis.

Indeed they did, Dennis. Several ex J&H men joined Bowker’s thereafter, with a view to bringing their traffic with them, including chaps in Glasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool & London.

Thanks for that Chris! Did you pick up any “decent” traffic? Cheers Dennis.

Well, decent enough for subbing out, but not much cop for putting on the lorries! Does Caberboard send a shiver down the old spine?

Years ago, when I was a small child, my dad worked for J&H Transport Coventry, he was well into the union scene, I remember going there with him, they had Bedfords, Guys and ERF’s and of course Scania Vabis. They had a depot in Torrington Avenue along side the rail line. later on my dad moved, or used to then take me to a yard in Siskin drive which was Export and General, they had ERF’s. Massey Ferguson tractor cases were stacked high and the wheels used to be bolted together. A real treat was going to Southampton or East India Docks with 6 tractors on the trailor.
Robert Charles Halliday a louder than usual Scot started up a Company called Halliday Transport and Fabricartion Services which used a yard at the bottom of Barby Lane in Rugby, he stored there rows and rows of brand new tractors and moved them about for Masseys. My brother worked there as a apprentice fitter, he hated a certain guy in the garage and soon got out on the road with a larger than life character, Mick Anderton, now sadly departed I hear, they roamed about the country with a flagship combine harvester that Massey had made, taking it to varios agricultural shows atc. Jane Haliday and one of the sons used to be there and I again visited the depot with my dad who later took up working for Halliday there.
I remember that they were working on a motorised surf board as it was termed then, a thing called a Skiddadle, this was to be the earliest form of a jet ski. Jane halliday took to demonstrating these and my brother did too, I had a try on one, what a thrill.
Turmoil and controversy never seemed to be far from Halliday and sadly the receivers moved in, he fled to Spain and has since passed away I believe. I remember an ex sailor called ■■■■ Rawlings who used to drive an A series ERF for them and I remember a lovelly Daf 2100 that they had. Lightish blue with the Halliday crest on the door.

Unfortunately I do not, I do remember it being parked and slowly decaying on a farm that was just off the A5 Rugby between Newton and the Gibbet cross near Lutterworth. Its long since gone now.Sad really it was a real beauty.
Some of the other vehicles were held by the George service Garage at kilsby for outstanding bills, but after that I really do not know.

Same on a Bowker motor!! I do remember unloading some of yours in Blackburn one Christmas - rather heavier than the stacker truck was designed for, so I was performing a bit of a balancing act…
