Are we ready for insect infused food, pastries, bread, cheese etc? The EU has just given the green light to allow the use of insects in our food.
The regulation allows companies to market powder derived from the larvae of the Tenebrio molitor, commonly known as the yellow mealworm. Under the new law, up to 4 grams of mealworms per 100 grams of bread and 3.5 grams per 100 grams of pastries are now legally permitted.
“This measure is part of the EU’s broader push to introduce alternative protein sources and reduce reliance on traditional livestock. According to the European Commission, meat consumption needs to be curbed in order to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040.”
Dairy will be the next industry to be hit.
Wouldn’t bother me tbh.
I aint saying I would knowingly and willinglly eat an insect as such, but there are all sorts of crap going into procesed food these days, that we don’t know about, if it’s safe and if it’s a source of protein why not.
I’ve eaten fried locusts…crunchy. Taste like fried food.
And chocolate covered bugs…Taste chocolatey.
So no surprises really.
I doubt anyone would notice if ground insect powder was used in foods.
I wouldn’t eat a fly I picked up off a rubbish tip, but neither would I eat a snail from the garden, or a mussel from the sea if I didn’t know it was from clean water. (Some hope of that today!)
If produced in a suitable environment, no problem.
I do agree with clear labelling.
We should all have a free choice, and choice can only be properly made if one is informed.
