Is This a Joke

The whole world is led to believe it’s a real war, not according to this court decision.
They let young fighting men leave there own country and bleed eu resources and yet the eu sends a 10 year old boy back to a so called war

It is a real war but what fighting men are bleeding EU resources? Also, I missed the location of the court and I’m not going to fight my way through all that cookie nonsense again, but I think it greatly amiss that the actual part of Ukraine was not mentioned.

However I do think that there is greater risk to the boy’s safety no matter where there so think it was a mistake to send him back.

Looks like half the story is being told in the article. It seems to be mostly about custody of a child, and parental disputes.

Mind you, Ukraine is not what I would call “safe”.

We should be supporting Ukraine more than we are. They are fighting bravely against a much bigger aggressor, and keeping Putin at arm’s length from the rest of us.

That is true, and to my mind whatever it costs us in support, it is by far the best course than actually going to war and lighting the match to the rest of Europe or even the world.

At last, although I am sure some countries wouldn’t agree the point, we have learned the lessons of '14 and '39, when we rushed in all guns blazing instead of doing the best we could with backup.

are you serious??? once again the smallest country has given the most
3.34 billion euros in financial help
0.84 billion in humanitarian aid
8.92 billion in military aid

a total of 13.1 billion euros all while facing financial ruin and the tory black hole remember

and before you start bleating about germany they are bigger than us by quite a margin 84.5 million people to our 68.3 so per person they have given less

Who is “the smallest country”?

It is far cheaper, and safer, for us to give support to Ukraine now, rather than let Putin belly up to the NATO borders and us invest in even more long term military hardware later. Give an inch, he will want a mile.

Its all in trump’s hands now
If he stops the big support let’s see what the rest will do
Remember it’s not charity all that money will be paid back in some form
Hundreds of thousands ran when the war started and now they are being asked to come back and fight, if they don’t they are being denied renewal of any paper work they need for living outside the country
And we thought communism was dead

One could always argue that if the NATO borders matched what they did with the fall of the Berlin wall and the establishment of “buffer states” we probably wouldn’t be in this predicament now.

I’m by no means an expert on this ongoing conflict and freely admit that if I’d been fed a diet only comprising of the western press then I too would believe Putin to be the great Satan, to coin a phrase.

However I have umpteen very close East European friends who paint quite a different picture. I assume that they take their news from different sources. I’m still non the wiser but I’m happy to take their comments on board.

What are you saying?
That the ex-Commie Blok countries, even with fall of the USSR are still not free to do as they want?
They must still obey the wishes of Russia?

In 1991, 92% of Ukrainians voted for independence from the USSR.
Crimea and Sevastopol were outliers in not wanting independence.

As a free country Ukraine has said it wishes to join NATO and the EU.
Putin doesn’t like that…but Putin is not Ukrainian and has no say in what another country chooses to do.

Given they have been invaded by Russia it seems that joining NATO was and is a sensible idea. In fact Finland, and Sweden have both just joined because of Putain’s invasion. If he wanted fewer NATO countries near him, his move has backfired spectacularly.

Who are we, or Russia, to dictate to another free country whether or not they should align with anyone else?
So much for the cheering when the Iron Curtain dropped if those newly liberated countries are still under the thumb of others.

Indeed, and not only did Ukraine vote for independence from Russia but Russia, along with several other states, UK and USA included, signed an agreement guaranteeing Ukrainian independence in exchange for them giving up the nuclear armaments on their territory. If Ukraine had kept those, would we even be where we are now with Putin rattling his nuclear sabre?

There is no point in Ukraine expecting Russia to stick to any agreements made now to end this invasion. They would have to accept the status quo now, ceding vast tracts of territory to Russia knowing full well that a few years down the line the Bear will come back for more. Unless Ukraine is in NATO that is, its only hope of avoiding further demands.

If I was a Ukrainian, I would vote to allow Crimea to stay Russian (it was for centuries before Kruschev gave it away), to allow a vote in the disputed eastern regions but with a substantial majority required, but in exchange for immediate membership of Nato. The only way to stop Russia coming back for more.

The difference between Russia and NATO and the EU is that it wants to regain colonial territory (a bit like if Britain invaded the Republic of Ireland) whereas the latter signatories allow members to leave if they want to. Some bluster about both, like Hungary, but I haven’t noticed that country setting about leaving, it knows which side its bread is buttered.
