Is there an agency who would sub to owner drivers?

Wheel Nut:
I am thinking about opening a shop, would you get the stock now or would you find the building first

Get the stock now, forget the shop and sell online!

Ok, so we know the OP is based in the shadow of the M4 and M25, has a 2013/63 Premium and is looking for work.

Lets assume he is paying the same for insurance as I am, and the same for his Operating Centre, (closer to London rents will offset the fact his wagon is worth 40k less than mine).

Not including Mobile Phones or his Salary, his standing costs will be about £75.00 a day assuming he is depreciating his wagon at 20% a year and I have guessed correctly he paid about £20k ish for it.

So £75.00 a day for the wagon, including a hired trailer.

BWD are giving me about 300 miles a day so £450 a day income.

300 miles a day at 8.5mpg means about 150.00 litres a day on motion lotion, assume worst case, £1 per litre + VAT and that gives us £225.00 a day running costs and standing costs together, AdBlue will throw in another £5 so £230.00.

Lets throw in a safety factor for me guestimating his costs, does 15% sound OK? Ok. £230 *1.15 = £264.50

£450 a day - £264.50 = £185.50 a day profit!

Now £35k a year over 260 worked days is £134.62 a day so take a proper salary and put £254.40 a week into the companies rainy day fund/maintenance fund or £13288.80

Also, if you do all December for BWD they guarantee you work in January, so less of a worry in the slackness.

Lets knock off £3k a year for planned maintenance, £2k for tyres and glass £780 a year for truck washing, (£30 a time, once a fortnight).

That gives him £7,448.80 a year into the new truck kitty. Two years of that gives him £14897.60 + the current truck which is worth £12k by then, £26,897.60 to go out and buy a newer tractor unit, which he will need because that close to London, its almost certain that the back to the yard load each week will take you into the LEZ and in 2019 he needs Euro6 or better, Renault didn’t do E6 until the T came out so the Premium is E5 and a ballsache.

Albion:
Planning is an unnatural process; it is much more fun to do something. The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression

Albion, it really is different strokes for different folks, but I’m gonna counter-quote you:

Ray Kroc, McFounder:
You must control every aspect of your business if you expect it to be a success.

I embrace this, which is why I know off the top of my head that every second of the working day, I have to make 0.51p or I’m losing money.

.

Just a clarification, isn’t it the ULEZ which covers the area of the Congestion Zone area that is going to be for Euro 6 by 2019, covering the Greater London area in 2020.

Absolutely, diferent strokes, I was pointing out that Lucas was in good company with Sir Digby and his apparent disregard for planning.

I know at the end of the year I make around 10% and I don’t finance anything. Perhaps I need to adapt the quote to read, Planning is an unnatural process, it’s much more fun to do something. The nicest thing about not planning is that success comes as a complete surprise rather than being preceded by a period of tedious number crunching

I think it’s fair to say that you and I would find it difficult to work together!

Or we would be the best pair of bosses a man could have. Though it could go either way and end in bloodshed so I don’t suggest we try it.
