Is there a list of Bridge Heights issued by official body?

Hi, am trying to find out if there is an online list of bridge heights for planning available on the web?

I’m trying to find the real height of the bridge out of ■■■■■■■ on the A70.
In Google maps its unmarked so I presume 16’6" … but on the list of bridge heights on the google link its 15’.
As there are no street signs on the road, what height is it? I get a nasty shock if it is 15" on a dark night, thinking it was actually 16’6" as its unmarked!

A70

Cheers Rich.

I find this site really good.If you press the square in the corner,it opens up with google maps.It will make google maps really crowded with all the bridge markings until you zoom in.
Once you check the bridges, you need to press the “layers”.
Then close of the HGV ALLIANCE tab.
This will return google maps to normal

Everything under 16`6" should be signed of course.

This site has a 15`00 bridge there…ish?

1285 - 15’0 - A70 Muirkirk Rd - ■■■■■■■ KA18 1

I don`t know the area myself.

Whoops…same site as Sploom…

This one puzzled me as the a76 was flooded at new ■■■■■■■ and a copper told me on the way out of ■■■■■■■ that I could use a70 to get back to where cairn Lodge is. He said be careful and check your height as there’s a low bridge, otherwise you go further up. Checked the atlas and it said 15ft. I was 14 9 so went for it but was puzzled that there was no height sign on the bridge?

Had this one which is clay Lane near Sandbach. It’s not marked up with any height but it is on a small back road and I know its OK with 14 9 as I crawled under it but I’m sure there’s not 1.5ft of room above to make it 16ft 6. If I’ve anything taller I go the other way.

Why not just buy a bridge height map, they’re cheap, and they’re ALL in there. :bulb:
You’re welcome

I dont think that lists every single bridge, only the ones on the main roads

Thanks for all the comments … I cant believe any bridge these days is left unmarked if its under 16’6", as usual the driver would be held to account even if he was in the clear.

Seems the ■■■■■■■ bridge is either not correctly marked on the online maps, its been raised to 16.6, or its an accident waiting to happen. But who the chuff knows…

I did but a Phillips truck map a while back, but as a humble day driver got fed up lugging the thing around. But thanks for the info, may be I’ll look at the AA one see if its a bit lighter.

Failing that I’ll but a 4.06m pole from Travis Perkins and carry that about.

Cheers All,

Rich.

(mm might search ebay, bet there is some clever height measuring device … may be even the middle of Lild will have them in  )

I’ve got that and it doesn’t have every bridge height in there, I’ve come across a few bridges that aren’t marked on the map, I only use it as a backup if the satnav fails!!!

Oh joy … cheers for the comment, not great though as its the AA ‘apparently’ publishing it.

May be back to a Phillips then …

Rich

The only database I know exists is the one Network Rail have of the railway bridges.

You would hope that any lack of height information on one lower than 16ft 6 would be noticed by network rail as presumably there is some kind of inspection schedule of these bridges. Worryingly about quarter mile before the clay Lane bridge there is a grey post with no actual sign attached to it which makes me wonder if that had a height limit on it.
I think most maps and navigation uses the same info. That bridge at ■■■■■■■ is on my Collins Road atlas and says 15ft. The above bridge says nothing in the atlas yet does seem very close to my trailer.
Interestingly there is a bridge near here that is marked as 16ft 6 in my road atlas, yet the road actually passes over the railway!

The mentioned network rail database, is this something anybody can get hold of ? I found a pdf with a list of bridges but couldn’t see height listed anywhere.

That bridge on the A70 at ■■■■■■■ would almost certainly have been a stone arch when constructed. As it is now steel beam, I believe the height has been raised.

If you have a look at the google maps street view for march 2021 you can see a tractor under the bridge. It is a New Holland t7.190 - with a cab height of 118.5". tractordata.com/farm-tracto … sions.html
The bridge is 16’6" easy.
The railway people have lots of information but not the the height above the road.
railwaydata.co.uk/linefiles/ … ridgesOnly
It is the barrhill road bridge.
My phillips truckers atlas has two other spurious heights (non-existant bridges) along or near that stretch of road.

Looks like - ‘Reconstructed: 2007’

But its still pretty worrying you cannot easily find a definitive online place to check bridge heights.

Wonder who does the bridge height measurements then, Highways?

Surely the rail chaps must know the road to bridge measurements? But perhaps as long a train goes over it safely are they bothered.

Not too sure I’ll be volunteering for night time winter work again in Dumfries!

See if this is of any help for you guys.

What about esdal 2, the route planning for abnormal loads for movement orders

The marking of bridge heights is the responsibility of the local authority/highways departments.

It’s a good few years since I retired but the truckers bible for bridge heights was always the AA Truckers atlas, that always served me well even when I had to spend most of my time in London in the latter days of my driving career. (I did retire in 2006 so much has changed since then, but the bridges are still the same, however I do know a bridge that did have a limit but since changes it is now over 16ft)
Now I would guess that almost every truck has WiFi or something similar for internet access so it would not be too difficult to plan a route using something like Google Earth to actually view the route.

It shows the bridge at knottingly road pontefract as 14’ 9’‘…it used to be google.co.uk/maps/@53.70085 … 384!8i8192
It also shows the bridge mentioned by the O.P. as 15’ but you can clearly see from the street view pictures it looks like it has had a similar job done as the pontefract bridge.

Surveyors carry laser measures instead of tapes now,one of those might do the trick.
