well it has all the blue signage etc but over the last few weeks i,ve seen everything goin through those tunnels including learner drivers, the local council tractor fresh from cutting the grass in the park to yesterday when i past a japanese woman on a bike about to go through the tunnel so is it a motorway or not?
Yes Sir it is. Same rules, same restrictions as any other motorway.
Enforcement however, is a different kettle of fish.
I say that it is as it has all the regulations of a motorway designated by the (M) Like the A64M, A57M Mancunian way and the A102M ,but it seems like Ken Livingstone stuck his oar in and removed the Blackwall Tunnel Approach Roadâs status when he became Mayor.
I reckon the police are just turning a blind eye in Leeds.
It seems that the only urban motorway that is stranger than any other is the A38M Aston Expressway with traffic light segregation and no central reservations
Theres a silly little bit of motorway spur off the M60 to Carrington. Blue signs no armco and i think possibly a set of traffic lights.
is it still the same â â ?

Top marks there c/d . There,s not many could tell the difference between a Jap, a â â â â â , or a bird from Sunderland.

I think the reason it doesnât have a centre reservation is because in the morning rush you can use the centre lane as a running lane heading in to town and in the evening rush it is used going out of town. I cant ever remember seeing traffic lights on it though apart from on the matalan island do you mean the green arrow or red cross to tell you when the lane is open or not. I have not been on that road for a while so just wondering what you mean by traffic light segregation.

Thatâs what I understood it to mean

Didnât they change that to a normal road after the widening along there a few years back? It used to be A6123M iirc (Carrington Expressway), 1 lane in either direction like a normal road but motorway limits so you could do 60 along it in your truck.

Exactly that, the green lights and red crosses, they get a bit â â â â â â off when you nip up the middle on a motorbike too . lights that control traffic, traffic lights, woteva

This is a stupid piece of road and should never have been made motorway status. For a start Iâd like to see anyone do 70 round that first right-hand bend as you enter the eastern end first tunnel, and then continue to do 70 for the rest of it with all the traffic coming on and off the ramps. Itâs simply impossible hence why it should never have been âmotorwayâ. The 40 limit is a sensible speed for it, but youâre right about all the cyclists, tractors, JCBs trundling along it

My mate got a fixed penalty for doing that, I felt kind of bad because I told him what way to go forgot that he was only riding a hair dryer with two wheels lol
think the worst is the A167M in Newcastle city centre has a 50 mph speed limit on it coming North just after Tyne bridge you join it last for 1.5 miles ( yes have checked this btw ) why as never used to be
you do get âLâ on it as well as hair dryers on wheels with L on have seen cyclist on there as well
Canât just find a link right now, but grass/hedge cutting tractors ARE allowed on a motorway.
Car learners are not. Being an urban m/way highly likely it was local traffic and theyâve just (illegally) left the Lâs on. Driving school cars are allowed to run from lesson to lesson with the roof sign & other L decals on.

Agree with you Mr K, another stupid bit of motorway is the M8 ! You canât do 70 because its restricted and theres a zillion junctions and people taking exits to the left and the right. How can that be a motorway ? its ridiculous
The reason some urban/suburban roads are designated motorway status is so that traffic can flow uninhindered by traffic lights, roundabouts, pedestrians, animals, learners, tractors, & other slow vehicles. It makes them safer & allows traffic to move quickly into, out of, or through an area without blocking up local streets.
Where does the idea come from that you must be able to do 70 on a m/way?? Strange.

Nothing illegal about any non learner driving on L plates.
Interesting point, this indicates you may indeed be right:
[Laws MV(DL)R reg 16 & RTA 1988 sect 87]
Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).
However, http://www.helpingldrivers.com/questions/index.htm says:
Q: Can I keep the L plates on my car all the time or do I have to remove them when my son, who is learning to drive, has finished his lesson?
A: You cannot keep the L plates on the car once the learner has finished driving. These plates are for learner drivers only and enable other drivers to alter their behaviour accordingly. The use of L plates by non-learner drivers is an offence and you can be pulled over for their incorrect use.
I knew personally a respectable lady who got stopped on an A road for exactly this when her sons where learning to drive circa 1976. IIRC she was not booked but given a stern warning. (ah, the good old school traffic cop days).
try phoning ATS for a call out on the M74 and you will be told that it dosent exist. but if you tell them your on the hard shoulder of the A74M they will
find you no probs.
