Is necessary to have an operators licence when towing for hire and reward with a landrover discovery and an ifor willaims 3.5 ton trailer?
I know a tacho is required but not sure about the O licence. Does someone have a link? Thanks
Basically, if VOSA put it on a weighbridge and it weighs more than 3.5 tonnes then they will be asking to see your O licence.
There is an exemption for towing vehicles weighing less than 1525kg but a Land Rover Discovery will not fall into this category.
You need an o license for hire or reward if its over 3.5 yes
My understanding was that if the towing vehicle was 3.5 or under and the unladen weight of the trailer was under 1.25 tons then an O licence wasn’t required. But as an old gig I might not be bang up to date as rules seam to change so quick. A bit like they kept it very quiet that car trailers could be 2.5 wide from last October.
One of the things i remember was when FORD built that heap of crap called an A Series, like a Transit van on Steroids. It was the answer to everyones dreams, until they realised it came under Operator Licensing rules.
No ‘O’ licence required as your using a duel purpose vehicle.

AIUI the unladen trailer weight is a max of 1020 kgs.
Laws changed last December:
Thanks Bluenose, that was what I wanted a link

No O/License needed, a Disco is a dual purpose vehicle as long as its below 2040kgs unladen weight.
The rules are only changing for users of vehicles working for Hire or Reward. Note: the following does not apply to dual purpose vehicles when towing trailers (see below*).
- “Dual purpose” vehicles
Under Schedule 3 (2) of the goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Regulations 1995 “a dual purpose vehicle and any trailer drawn by it” is identified as exempt from goods vehicle operator licensing.
The dual purpose category generally includes cars, estates, pickups (with a second row of seats (crew cab) only), and domestic 4x4 vehicles such as Land Rovers, Jeeps, and other similar vehicles below 2040kgs unladen weight.
