IPEC ?

Basilbrush:
When I worked for TNT, they bought IPEC …

Out here (Oz) Toll Group bought IPEC. Toll is owned by the Japanese (who now want rid of Toll) and TNT is now owned by FedEx. How things change and yet remain the same.

Remember IPEC ? they ran out of East Northampton (cant remember the industrial est) but they did most of Europe with nice yellow DAF 3300 wagon and drag swap bodies. I used to talk to a couple of them … Top Hat ran out to Paris and changed over with the Rome driver then came back, it took him two days.
The other guy I used to talk to was from Dublin and would run to Northampton, this run also took him two days and we would chat now and then…

NOW THEN ! … Small world situation here :exclamation:

Lats year I was sitting in the loading office in Yonkers Sugar refinery when in comes this bloke picking up Molasis and sits down, he had an Irish accent and commented on my Brit flag … Turns out its the same guy from IPEC Dublin. :astonished: :astonished: :astonished:

I see him quite a lot now … hows that for coincidence ?

Isn’t that the current TNT Inland customs depot

I used to run out of there a lot for Jan De Rijk with a yellow F1225 drawbar

The Irish driver now drives for Carry’s tank lines out of the mid west, f**ked if I can remember his name ■■? but I saw him 3 weeks ago when he came back for one of his regular loads, there are a few Irish lads on that company and they are all O/O’s, he drives a nice Volvo.

Remember IPEC ?

Hi Pat: Great thread! Me born and bred in Northampton, as a lad I was always at Ipec’s depot to photograph the trucks as they came and went. I lived about a mile away, so straight after school, on me bike and off I went. At first I was not allowed in as it was (still is) a customs clearance depot, so used to wait on the bend just before the gatehouse and snap the trucks there.
Then I got a break via school. Had to do a ‘work experience’ and chose Ipec. The company allowed it and I went ‘inside’ for a whole week. There I met the likes of Johhny Moore snr and his son Johhny Moore jnr and a great guy called Arthur Elliot. Most people there had moved down from Hull where the co was originally based.
It used to be called GELDERS, then IPEC bought it out. There was always a connection with the Dutch co Gelders Spectra, hence the brown and blue livery. (look closely at some of the pics below).
I had a great time on ‘work exp’ and hardly spent any time in the (boring) office, instead I used to go for rides in the trucks! Johhny Moore jnr took me to Paris and Arthur took me to Dublin  …all I wanted to do was drive a truck!

ARTHUR…JOHNNY…are you out there?

So here are a selection of my photos…enjoy and I hope they bring back a few memories.

One of the first pics I took ‘inside’. Note the DAF 2600, the Maggie (JIM BROOM) and the Leyland Revier yard shunter. This would have been around 1976.

One of my most favourite pics. Arthur Elliot driving, I remember him letting me jump out to take the pic as he carefully came throught the arch. Think it was at Conway(?) on way to Holyhead for the ferry…

Merc at Dublin depot.

These DAF drawbars came in ‘brand new’ from Holland then were re-registered with Northants reg numbers. This one was KVV 308Y.

There were a few subbies even in those days. RONALD PATTISON from Northampton ran a couple of trucks. The Foden was a flyer!

His DAF 2800 was ex Middle East and had the full kitchen fitted under the bunk.

A couple of Dutch lads to finish for now…

As I think about Ipec, I’m thinking pink…no not the pink panther  but INDEPENDENT EXPRESS - your overnight success.

If memory serves me well, when TNT took over Ipec, I’m sure there were a few managers who went it alone to set up Independent? Can anyone confirm?

There weren’t many depots - Northampton, Luton, Heathrow, Manchester (I think)…
Trucks were pretty er…striking?
Soon got know as the ‘girly squadron’ on the CB.

Hi mate: Did Jan De Rijk have any connections to Ipec/TNT? The colours - brown red and blue - are the same as Gelders Spectra (see my post and pics)?
Ash.

Where do I start

when IPEC took over Gelders Jan de Rijk was just an owner driver with a couple of trucks and by taking over Gelders IPEC got lumbered with at least 1 airfreight trunk for KLM that they did not really want so they asked Jan if he wanted to take over, as IPEC were respraying all the gelders motors anyway he just kept the colours and at the same time got his foot in the door at KLM and the airfright world and never looked back and at the same time carries on doing a lot of work for TNT as well.

truckerash:

this one was owned by the Gebroeder Remie which were 3 enormous dutch brothers the oldest was Wim, the truck was eventually sprayed brown and carried working for Dachser for several years and still used to do customs clearance at Northampton

Really great photos Truckerash, thanks mate

When I worked for TNT, they bought IPEC & we had a night trunk up to Northampton added to our matrix. It was a 6 night week when you were on that one & saturday night was a bit of a drag.

I remember meeting Wim Remie in the ICD at Round Spinney, he was certainly a nice chap. I also remember the two Foden 6x4 units in Ipec colours, they were subbies working there & one of the sons was called Chris, they moved over to pulling trailers for TNT out of the hub at Atherstone for a while then I never saw the trucks or Chris again. He too was a nice lad & I hope he’s well.

There was a young chap at the ICD who did night shunting, blimey he could handle those wagon & drag outfits even with a left hand drive lorry on it. I can’t remember his name now, but he used to wake us up when our trailers were ready to go. I hope he’s a member of this forum.

Arthur Elliott is still at TNT Northampton,Hes the Depot Manager now.

I cleared forward at IPEC a couple of times, nice only 45 mins from home.

Pat I think if you go back to the late 60’s to early 70’s there was a few wagons out of the same yards as BRS at Duston oppersite the pub " Rifle ■■■■" then they went to round spinney.
