I am an agency driver, and have been getting this too.
I was fine in vehicles wieh Siemens Tacho units, but have been driving vehicles with VDO units and getting this message.
I wonder if it is a software messup in one kind of unit?
No its a batch of faulty cards. There is a date for them somewhere on here but it seems to be cards which need re-newing in the next 12 months or so.
I still wonder… After getting this problem in a VDO tachographed vehicle yesterday, I was in a different verhicle that had a Siemans tachograph today and had no problems whatsoever.
Perhaps we are looking at a challenge with both cards and/or tachographs.
I passed this information to the DVLA this morning. They were really very grateful for it, as it does point towards individual tachograph manufacturers (which will no doubt cost them money to fix) rather than being all the DVLA’s fault which will cost the taxpayers money.
Anyway, that the same card works differently in different tacho units points their investigation in a new direction.
You mean Siemens VDO ?
Siemens and VDO are the same company going by the name of Siemens VDO
I’ve been having the same problem with my digicard.
Spoke to the transport manager and he showed me an e-mail from DVLA.
They are aware of the problem, DON’T send your card back as they are automatically sending out replacement cards to everyone who is affected.
He told me there are 175,000 cards issued between certain dates that have this ‘Error 48’ problem.
My card works in certain units, but not in others!
I get the error message and the unit spits out my card. Put it back in and it works fine!
Just got this in an email newsletter from VOSA
Faulty tachocards
As many of you will be aware, DVLA has identified an issue which means that some digital tachograph cards may malfunction.
The only cards affected are those issued between 24 March 2007 and 31 August 2008. Cards issued outside of these dates are not affected.
Drivers with faulty cards do not need to contact the DVLA for a replacement. New cards will be sent out automatically, along with a letter to explain what to do with your old card. Make sure you have downloaded all drivers’ hours data from your old card before returning it.
Drivers must make sure their address details are up-to-date with the DVLA. You can check and/or update your details at http://www.direct.gov.uk/changemyaddress.
If your card is not faulty but is due to expire, you will still receive a reminder to apply for a replacement card, which you should do in the normal way.
VOSA has agreed with DVLA to allow drivers with one of these faulty cards longer than the usual 15 days grace period. During this time, drivers must maintain a manual record of their activities. Take the VU printouts at the start and end of each day and record your personal details on them:
Name
Driver card/driving licence number
Periods of other work
Availability
Breaks (including start and finish times)
Rest (including start and finish times)
Don’t forget to sign the printout!
VOSA has communicated this issue to counterparts in other member states. VOSA will continue to work with DfT, DVLA and the trade associations to smooth the journeys of drivers who are affected and who will be travelling abroad.
I had this ‘fault’ yesterday, forgot to do a printout at the start of shift, bollox.
Anyway, my card was issued 13/08/08, why ain’t I been sent a replacement card yet if ‘they’ know I’m gonna have an error code 48?
Anybody called DVLA recently and if so what direct number did you call? Was it this:- 0300 790 6109
I don’t think I’ll be telling my Agency about this, it’s hard enough getting work out of them without this ‘■■■■ up’ in the way ffs.
