Intensive courses. Do they work?

Regarding intensive lorry driving courses - It worries me a bit that learning to drive an LGV involves getting in a cab for the first time on a Monday then hopefully passing your test by the Friday. Back in the day (30+ years ago!) when I was taking driving lessons for a car, it involved around 3 months worth of lessons to get me up to scratch.

Just wondering how other complete newbies found these intensive courses.

I understand your trepidation. But a good trainer with decent equipment and facilities can definitely make it happen. It’s the industry norm and has been since staged training was introduced in 1997. Prior to that, the training from car to artic was nearer 40 hours - normally over a couple of weeks.

If you are still seriously concerned, visit your trainer and ask to at least sit in a vehicle and chat with an instructor. Hopefully, that will put your mind at rest.

Good luck with it, Pete S

I know it seems like a big mountain to climb, but you already know how to drive, HGV training is really about upgrading your licence. It’s less daunting than you’re imagining, I remember I thought something similar about 15 years ago

Thanks Pete and Zac. That’s good to know. cheers!

Car training = no idea when you start
Lorry training = now got much more idea before you start

It can’t be stressed enough: you should already know how to drive if you have a Cat. B licence!

Learning to drive HGVs is more about operation of the vehicle and differences.
