I suggest you look at changing your house insurance then. A good policy would cover these items so long as you take “reasonable care” of them.
At least you could find out what it would cost to insure - then you have to decide whether it is worth the money.
Yes you can get your personal possesions in the truck covered my Churchill policy covers items “temporarily” away from the home (ok, so they never go home LOL) … also got accidental damage … if i drop the tv, as i climb into the cab … just need to make sure you have sufficient cover ££ wise, also specify any big ££ items … they can limit max on individual items, same as in the house.
My previous Lloyds Bank policy also covered my stuff … i made my branch check and get me a letter to CONFIRM !
You just need to ASK around … but look for “items away from home”.
Hope this helps.
thanks for your responces, we are going to change our policy so hopefully this problem will be sorted.
Thanks again, The Mrs
Funny this should come up today.
I have just had today our house and contents renewal notice and all extras are listed which includes:
“Personal possesions in, and goods away from your home-personal property,(Maximum £1,500 per item) -£3,485”
We do our insurance through a trusted broker and he doesn’t come up with any gimmicks like,“Free contents insurance”,you don’t expect to get any favours there do you?
To use an old saying,“You only get what you pay for”!
cheers thanks we are looking into new insurance companys
Be carefull with assuming that it is insured on your home contents insurance.
Quite often is meant temporary, as talking your telly a day out when you go to the beach, picknick etc.
If your lucky it’s probaly sometimes covered in a (tour) caravan for the period you are on holiday (but more often it has to be separate insured)
You will find quickly out, when it has been stolen in a “commercial” enviroment things will look different, there are probaly 1000 reasons why they won’t pay out.
If they want to put on a piece of paper that your personal belongings are covered in somebody elses vehicle, fine otherwise I would look for another solution.
Years ago certain companies would offer these insurances on the continent, but I am not sure for the UK, we looked in it, to add it on our truck insurances, but they didn’t want to touch is with a barge pole, or you needed so much security on your vehicles (incl. security guard, guard dog [can be replaced by missus] 10ft high barbered fences on every laybay where you went for some leakage of waste water ) that it was not worth to do it.
If it doesn’t say “black on white writting” that it is covered, assume that it is not covered at all.
A topic of conversation at our company at the moment:
Last week one of our trucks went up in smoke, and the driver was hoping the COs insurance covered his loss of personal belongings, as no one was sure sugested he check his household policy, and they will not commit to any payment until the company insurance is checked out.
Although most years I change insurers on houshold cover, I ensure they know my proffesion and normaly pay a premium above the quote to cover personal items away from home, to the tune of 5K.
You may find when taking out this exrta cover any items over the value of £300 need specifying hence the laptop is specified.
On this years policy it cost £4.28p extra, I hope I never need to see what there responce would be to any claim, but would hope as this extra cover was specificly taken out they would pay out for maps, clothes, ect as well as the laptop and tv.
