Info Minehead to Ilfracombe.local knowledge

Anybody know if the A39 M/head to Ilfra is either/or suitable legal for an artic.
I know there is some sort of weight limit around there, and I’ve only been on it as far as Alcombe in the past.
If not the B3224/3223/3358 link between Wheddon Cross (I know about the length restriction at Wheddon Cross btw) and the A339 …is that through a National park and therefore restricted?
If not I’ll go down to Exebridge and pick up the B3227 to South Molton, it’s just that the other routes look more direct.

No, Porlock Hill is a big no-no and you wouldn’t want to go either way on it in an artic even if you could. I’ve been there in a car and the whole area stinks of burning clutches and brake shoes.

yep, as harry says porlock is a nightmare this time of year would’nt go through there in any thing above a sprinter… beautiful place though…

18T weight limit on A39 Porlock Hill.

Would it be churlish to note that my satnav flags it as such and consequently does not suggest it as a viable route [emoji16]

How old is that photo Harry or do traffic police still drive Sierras down there

I would come off the A399 and take the A3123 then A361 into Ilfracombe, avoiding Combe Martin. There is a steep and twisty descent into the village and it is long and narrow with a slightly less steep and twisty ascent out of it. Where are you going in Ilfracombe? If you need to you can turn around in the entrance to Watermouth Castle to avoid going through Combe Martin on your way back.

Thanks for that, just checked map it looks like you are right for best way in.

Happy to have helped  Ilfracombe is known by people who don’t live there but live nearby as “filth and gloom”. The coastline is beautiful, access a nightmare  If your route takes you through the high street try and do it before 0830. Enjoy the views on that route.

Beats trunking up and down motorways any day rob ha ha

God that is an old picture, Sierra cop car. Don’t see hardly any Sierras on the road anymore.

1992 the last Sierra rolled off the production line.

True, you don’t see Sierras any more, then two (if you count that one,it’s an old pic) come along at once restores your faith a tad

According to posts on the Bus Forum, the buses on that route over Porlock have a specific preventative maintenance regime.

I Quote “They’re maintained preventatively for the routes they’re operating. Yesterday from the 6 open tops / sides was a wheel bearing, a starter motor, suspension failing, overheat. It happens. If we could plan when buses would fail live would be much easier. It’s just coincidence.”
