India isn't messing about!

Delhi bans refuelling of cars older than 15 years old, it came into effect last week.

That should take about 75% of cars off the road

Can you imagine all those owners of the classic Morris Oxford/Hindustan Ambassador turning up at the pumps.

It is only Delhi being spoken about it seems and from the article:
“It is to be noted that diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years are already banned from operating on the roads in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).”
There are not many old vehicles apparent on Delhi roads now , so I would question that the cause of pollution, and that is a real problem, is old vehicles. Getting rid of old vehicles may help, but will it make a significant improvement?

Yes, some of those pics of smog in Delhi are frightening, imagine breathing that sheet in on a daily basis. I can see it expanding like the London clean zones, This will push the old smokey Joes out to adjoining towns/cities which all have emission sensors & when they start to ring bells they will get banned there.

so basicaly this new rule is cobblers as they cant be on the road to go to the pumps… or is it more proof that all these massivly polouting countries (far more than the uk) dont really give a monkeys regardless of what they agree to and its only the uk that is falling over themselves to follow it as anyone with a brain cell can see.

The mornings in Delhi one sees the `early morning mist’ and thinks “Oh, the sun will soon burn that off”, but hours later it is unchanged.
Travelling overland from there the horizon gradually appears as the fug thins out, what was a grey blur does become a line between earth and sky.

Smelled Ok to me when I was there, in and out of the YM to eat on the pavement with the chippati seller who did a very nice bowl of curry too. But then that was nearly 60 years ago. :joy:

1950 Delhi population was about 1.5million.
Now about 35 million… about 3 or 4 times that of London.
Half the UK population in one city.

Big.

They obviously haven’t got enough to busy themselves with, those Indians.

Uk should take note of this with there clean air zones.
I don’t fully agree with them.
But here it’s case of we want clean air.
your car doesn’t meet the standard to drive into clean air zone but it’s ok pay us and you can pollute as much as you like.
If your car is non compliant it should be banned end of.
But we all know will never happen they make to much money from it

the regular cause of smog and pollution is mainly the millions of food cookers and household fires which use wood, petrol, dung or whatever they can get hold of.

Plus quite a lot of pollution coming from commercial burning of waste because they have an absolutely horrendous waste problem there, burning of plastics etc to recover precious and semi precious metals from electronics and cables, and some weird process that is supposed to recover useful chemicals and carbon black from partially burning tyres.

Then every year it’s made into a killer smog when they burn the stubble and pollution jumps massively leading to deaths from respiratory disease. Without googling it, I’m pretty certain they still have motor rickshaws running crappy little motors that belch out masses of fumes.
Lastly in the heavy congestion, cars etc will be running but going nowhere.

If you go back to London and other big cities back when coal fires were very common in homes, and many cities had their own power station - coal fired, and gas was made from coal, all industry located in or very close to the city, it created a hell of a lot of smoke and particles. Add a tiny whiff of air borne moisture, and that’s what created our own smogs.

It was largely the end of coal fires in homes that reduced smog and improved british air quality, though if we had fewer cycles and more cars 60 years ago then maybe we’d have had a bit more smog from exhaust fumes.

If you don’t want the pollution then stop cramming massive amounts of the country’s population into small city areas.
That’s what the Green Belt around London was supposed to stop. Now they want to use it as a land bank instead to expand the urban crap hole even more.

here are some facts on all this the tree huggers dont want you to know. a car using 1 gallon of fuel produces 20 pounds of co2. thats an unchangeable fact. Most modern cars get 60 mpg but even if they got 40 over their life time. To break even from the manufacturing poloution of 5.6 tonnes (12,346 pounds) it would have to do 12,346/20 * 40 (24,692) miles. Only then does it start to create more than it would of if it hadnt been made.

The Indian government are already talking about National Capital Regions, which constitutes certain areas of neighbouring states Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
The ET expects the government to enforce the new restrictions first in Delhi and then in NCR districts, beginning with Gurugram, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and Ghaziabad, which have high vehicular density. Additionally, it may bar all goods vehicles not meeting the current BS VI emission standards from entering Delhi within a year."
Every time I’ve seen the lorries there on video, they look like they’ve been converted to run on nutty slack. :scream:

as to the ulez scam ignoring the cost of buying the car… and assuming you would have to pay it every day you would have to buy a car that saved you 2 gallons a day which is clearly impossible.

The trucks seem to be mostly locally made stuff. Some Volvos but not too many.
India and China had an ongoing border dispute for many years, and I guess that is why there are few Chinese trucks around, but after a thaw maybe the Chinese will now make inroads?

Just looking at the cabs nof many local trucks it appears they are based on older Western designs. Change the grills and trim and they are recognisably older Scania, Renault, Daf and Merc cabs. Plus some very square locally produced cabs.
The local cabs seem like the Tardis in reverse! Fairly large from the outside, but cramped inside.

What emissions laws are used for the engine/drivetrain I don’t know.

I’ll try to look out some pictures to show what I mean about the cabs.

Locally produced cabs.
Small side windows, that are often sliders. Small rear-hinged doors. The cab floor appears to be above the level of the wheels so in spite of the height quite cramped. Often double manned too. Occasionally see them driving with doors fully open but as was barely getting over 35degC still not summer temps. Looking inside most have more bling than yer average Scannie.

Merc copies?

Note the hanging tassels on the tipper. Many trucks have them.

Also lots of 4 wheel Ashok=Leyland trucks have copies of Ford Cargo cabs. Some 4x4 versions are used by the military.
They seem quite tough. Seeing one with a car buried under the front bumper the truck looked unharmed…
