In cab cameras have arrived at our place

If I win the lottery next week,I will be brave enough to tell them I will NOT drive a vehicle with a driver facing camera and I will go one better.I wont even drive one with an incident camera either.I wont be like those spineless ones who put up with cameras.Oh,they have a mortgage and mouths to feed, maybe the wife cant work and they havent inherited anything from their parents.Who knows or cares what their financial situation is and,if they leave the job, they get a big pay cut.No excuse!

Condoms prevent accidents ya melt. How many clips are there from driver facing cameras where the chimp behind the wheel careers into traffic whilst dicking about with his phone? Didn’t stop them did it?

It stops us using the phone.I cant touch my phone NOW because I know the camera is there. So,I hate to say this but they might reduce accidents at the expense of invasion of privacy

Ok, but the responsible professionals amongst us don’t touch our phones anyway, why would we when there are hands free facilities, and when we know we will get nicked If we did.?
So you are saying you would or you do use your phone, but NOW only the camera stops you. :unamused:
So it is precisely because of people like you that a lot of drivers have to put up with this crap then eh? :unamused:

Yes,its all my fault.Youre always blaming me for all the problems of the world

Amazon.

There’s things that you can know, without having to check them.

If basic things like checking a handbrake is “on” is too much trouble, that sums up the whole problem with the industry - unprofessional drivers.

Does the same driver just “know” their tyres are in good condition? Do they just “know” the fuel gauge is reading correctly? Do they just “know” that no one has tampered with their locking handle when they’ve been parked up? Do they just “know” their load security is ok?

A professional driver checks things, that’s what makes them professional.

Note I did not name you as the driver who said they didn’t think they should have to check the handbrake was on, you’re the one that shamelessly stuck your hand up to that with your reply.

I was trying to equate to your statement that you shouldn’t take literally all you read on the internet.

Does the same driver just “know” their tyres are in good condition?

When did I ever say that I don’t check my tyres?

Do they just “know” the fuel gauge is reading correctly?

If you brim it and it says full, you drive it and it goes down, you park it and it stays the same…how often did you dip your tank to check?

Do they just “know” that no one has tampered with their locking handle when they’ve been parked up?

If they were parked up in a secure RDC that no one else has entered, or at least approached their truck during their stay, then yes, they can “know”.

Do they just “know” their load security is ok?

A professional driver checks things, that’s what makes them professional.

The definition means they get paid, nothing about their quality

Note I did not name you as the driver who said they didn’t think they should have to check the handbrake was on, you’re the one that shamelessly stuck your hand up to that with your reply.

I didn’t think for a minute that you didn’t remember.

No it does not simply mean that at all.

When things go wrong for for a driver and they find themselves in front of a Judge, Magistrate or a TC (sometimes it’s pick two from those three) and they are told “Higher standards are expected of you because you are a professional driver”, they will be using the word “professional” according to these (Cambridge) dictionary definitions:

Having the qualities that you connect with trained and skilled people, such as effectiveness, skill, organization, and seriousness of manner:
It would look more professional if the letter was typed.
She always looks very professional in her smart suits.
You’ve done a very professional job stripping that floor!
Relating to work that needs special training or education:
Chris, you’re a nurse, so can I ask your professional opinion on bandaging ankles?
Both doctors have been charged with professional misconduct (= bad or unacceptable behaviour in
their work).
Having the type of job that is respected because it involves a high level of education and training:
Room for rent in shared house - would suit professional person.
A bar full of young professional types in suits

It’s amateurish attitudes to the responsibilities of HGV driving that have resulted in (i) the patronising attitudes towards drivers found in many companies, where they automatically assume a driver needs to be told to do the things that were once common sense parts of the job, and (ii) the modern day excessive amounts of oversight by DVSA, OTC, Police et al.

Hopefully you’ll have a driver facing camera fitted to your car soon aswell then.

You got me wrong.I dont want cameras any more than anyone else, but nobody knows other drivers circumstances. He might be up to his neck in debt, his wife might have left him.He could have a sick child. Not everyone is in a secure financial position where they can just leave their job

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes.

You’ll be a mile away, and have his shoes.

OP updated with image of announcement. Basically it’s a ststem designed and intended to catch people out and nothing to do with actual safety. Internally minitoref by transport admin staff, camera is on for 10 mins after turning engine off and key out. Little red dot blinking in the lower left corner constantly so probably a recording indicator. There are more details absolutely disgusting but I will talk about it after I’ve left this craphole of a company

ETS:
Welp it happened. They’ve sneakily installed them after months of promising ‘‘new vehicles with telematics’’. There were some rumors about driver facing cams but I didn’t (want to) believe them.

I’ve talked to a few of the other drivers and not a single one is excited about this novelty. We’ve been trying to figure out a way to challenge this completely uncalled for decision - at least at our depot I’m unaware of any public road accidents involving our HGVs in the last 3 years so to come up with these out of the blue feels like a stab in the back or a slap in the face, equal parts disrespectful and disgusting.

We don’t know how they work - do they stream, record - when, for how long, is the information (recordings) stored and where/for how long, who has access to the records…and who is allowed to view them and for what reason

Really bummed about this as I liked this job but this is a line in the sand for me I think. I’m going on holiday but I’ll be thinking about a new job potentially. Absolute f-ing s-t show this profession is turning into

Oh btw there were and will not be any new vehicles, it’s just triple cam clusters installed in the old ones.

So it can /will detect “harsh steering “!! Wtf
Eating(so obviously it’s a live feed on all the time, and “various other activities “ )
■■■■ that!
Hopefully everyone leaves that place ETS.I bet they won’t, but you’ll feel good leaving-absolute ■■■■ take.
“Eating “ffs.I’m going to suggest that if someone can’t eat a sandwich/drink a cup of coffee whilst steering a lorry( cos steering is all you’d be doing) then they shouldn’t be behind the wheel of anything…

I feel kinda fortunate as I can just walk out of a job whenever I want. I would in a heartbeat if there were driving facing cameras… even if it meant I had to go work for booker or some other crap firm doing multi drop lol.
