Having worked at quite a few places, I can state that if there is an accident of any sort, the management will (most likely) be the types to immediately start picking faults with their own driver’s actions, including reviewing any footage available to them. You can cast iron guarantee that everyone in the office will know about the accident and probably most will have viewed the forward facing camera footage and the footage of you driving before you even arrive back.
There will be many theories being banded about and judgments being given on the subject by people who have never driven a truck. This is what drivers would have to deal with. The ambulance chasers are everywhere and your misfortune is their glee. Sad but true.
However, a company does have a right to change terms and conditions and go through a process to introduce such measures. Drivers finding out when cameras appear in the cabs is on a different level of absurdity though.
It’s a pointless argument, remember It’s drivers so it’s every man for himself
It’s a hard one to call on the legal end of it especially if you’re tramping
Is it your private space or company space, the contents would be private but maybe not the cab itself
It’s got that bad with rumours that some drivers are afraid to lift a coffee cup in case they get into trouble what must the job be like with a camera looking at you
The union jobs will fare better against it also the rare few who stand by their principles, the rest will just fall into line but eventually it will be the normal thing everywhere
ETS:
I’m not quitting, when I get back from holiday I will request a detailed description about how/why/who the cameras will be used by/for. Once I’ve read through it I will refuse to accept the new conditions of work and they’ll have to sack me then I’ll claim unfair dismissal as it is a one sided change of contract/terms and Cs imo.
You are mad if you think you can beat them that way. They will respond by keeping a very close eye on you and pulling you up on any minor indiscretion, and giving you the worst jobs/shifts, safe in the knowledge that eventually you will tell them where to stick their job.
Save yourself the aggravation. Jack it in and find something else. Your firm sounds like they have been taken in by the snake oil salesmen that these ‘camera telematics’ firms employ with promises of reduced insurance premiums, better fuel consumption and all the rest of it. One driver being difficult isn’t going to change that. Now, if you and your colleagues all stuck together…

Ive had cameras shoved inside me anywhere they can fit them so it wouldnt be such a big deal!
But seriously if you were working out my place and you came up to me,I would say, yes,Im prepared to go along with whatever action the union were going to take. But to be honest I wouldnt vote for strike,I dont wont to rock the boat,Ive got too many things going on in my life that need the pounds, shillings and pence but I wouldnt go against the union by crossing the picket line.
But if you dont have a union, its a bit more difficult. They could sack you all ,if its only a small company. The driver shortage is over. We’re just ten a penny now.Sorry to put it in black and white
This is the meaning of I will do anything I’m told, I will obey as a slave I don’t care about other people only myself, but if a situation comes up where i would stand out like crossing a picket I don’t have a choice i have to act like a judest to my beliefs and pretend im one of the boys
I think it’s called having a belief in something but not really being genuine about it also missing the chance to get stoned while crossing the picket, how could you miss that
You have 2 choices
1- ■■■■ it up and get on with it . Nobody will stand with you , your union (if you have one ) will make lots of noise but at the end of the day they’ll roll over with management to keep them sweet .It will be an insurance “thing” and nobody can do anything about it or some such excuse /drivel .Your company will then be the reason some other company fits them because your lot fitted them and got away with it - "we have to fit them becuse the other lot fitted them " and so on and so forth . We are doing it because everyone else is , we don’t know why everyone else is doing but we will follow along like lemons .
2- you can walk and find another job .
I’d walk and clear my stuff out of the truck
You must make your own choice and then live with it .

No the union don’t just fold ‘to keep them sweet’ in the vast majority of cases, it’s no coincidence that the majority of operators with a decent recognised union have either defeated driver facing cameras altogther and/or made it plain before the management made any moves that they would be met with refusal.
What people forget, especially drivers many of whom have swallowed the anti union rhetoric, a union is not some mythical dragon that will come breathing fire to terrify the management, the members at that company are the union, the union office itself is there for help and legal and other advice.
Sadly in too many cases there’s a handful of drivers and other workers at a place that are members, who’s chosen stewards take the member’s concerns and pay claims etc to management, it stands to reason that if you have a 2/3rds+ membership you are going to have a stronger position than if 1/3rd of the workers are members.
Too many drivers on unionised companies have no sense of their own hypocrisy, they won’t join the union (what under £200 a year from a £40/50k salary? that they would never have had were it not for those union members?) but are the most critical of whatever terms are negotiated and then the very first to milk the benefits the union members have gained for them, including the sickie scam, sometimes kissing the arse of managers to cover all angles for themselves.
They work great and combined with a forwardfacing cam cover your arse if something goes wrong. Things work a bit different in NZ, but these were brought in because of a few incidents where the drivers version was at best ambiguous. The only choice we were given was sign and accept or don’t let the door hit you on the way out (due to visa requirements I was in no position to argue anyway). I have no problem with this version if I am honest but also recently enjoyed driving a unit which didn’t have one.
The last incident that brought them in, was one of our drivers went straight on in a fully loaded truck and trailer at a well-known tight bend at 90kph, took the truck several hundred metres into the bush and ended up on his side. Drivers story is that he was adjusting his boot…but it is well accepted that he fell asleep at the wheel (this is not a corner that you take at speed and not one you adjust your footwear).
Of course, this all begs the question of over work, long hours, short rest etc, but on the other hand, the rest of us manage the work ok.
Unions, not worth the letters its written with, they have no power here, and I couldn’t be bothered with them in the UK. Whinge whinge whinge but do naff all.

I’ve worked at 2 places during my work career that had unions and both places I joined the union and paid the dues . Both places became so hard to work at because of the union holding back people from just getting on with the job , people getting the best shifts because they were mates with the union reps , wouldn’t do this , would only do that - honestly it was nothing short of sickening . Work shy and hiding behind a union rep when they got called out . I had 9 years of it (between both companies ) and when I left I swore to myself I’d never work anywhere there was a union involed, a decision I don’t regret in any shape or form the last 10 years .
talking of work shy has anyone heard what became of the 4 unionboy strikers who were fired at Felixstowe docks .At least 2 were sure they had a case too. Last i heard they were outside the doors of the HQ in Shanghai of the firm who owns the docks
Is it one of those cameras from china where the electronic cables get so hot that they end up frying when you hold a lighter under them for about 30 seconds?
[EDIT] I also heard that trucks with driver facing cameras have a fault whereby they the engine actually fails if you take a whizz in the adblue tank.
Its alarming that there are lunatics making decisions like that with no regard for basic privacy for the drivers. The public can see us through the big giant windscreens. If we were up to something it would be noticed. Look up the word “panopticon”. It was once a sci-fi literature device about a future prison. How is your nice job looking today ZX 24 31 51 B?
Or read the book 1984 by George Orwell in his predictions of living in a dystopian and authoritarian world with the Thought Police who made people vanish if they disagreed with the strict regime.
I suppose we could say being vanished is the modern day equivalent of what people use for being cancelled, which is what Meg did to Morgan when she used him for media advice before she was well known, she cancels her friends and family.
Orwell wrote about Big Brother and BB is watching you with giant tv screens outside that were spying on everyone, for a book penned in 1949 a lot of it has become true.
Check out Pegasus spyware used by the Israeli secret police whereby they had access to phone voicemail messages, text, video calling, and the microphone.
They targeted VIP’s , Government and political members from other countries that they perceived as being a threat especially dictators.
Our place got one of our 2 new lorries last week pre-fitted with an in cab camera. The other class 1 driver (there’s only 2 of us) told me about the camera as I looked around it.
Yesterday I told the person that makes our firms decisions, “I am not happy working with an in cab camera and I am not willing to work with it when I get my new truck next week”. I also said that “I didn’t want to leave the firm as I am happy working there and had up until that point no intention to leave, but after 15 years I would now terminate my employment rather than be subjected to an in cab camera”.
A few minutes later we had agreed that both of the cameras will be removed before I get my new truck at the end of the week.
I see no valid reason for having an in cab camera and there is nothing in the world that would convince me that they are necessary.

If there’s only 2 of you why the heck did they get them fitted if both of you don’t cause damage etc
