Last year I took a 13’3" trailer under a 12’9" bridge, all be it at low speed, but it went under no problem. I guess this demonstrates the amount of leeway some bridges have.
I used to go under this quite reguarly and my truck was 10’ 6, the guy who taught me the route told me i would fit, god knows how he found out
i would i go under the a606 at melton in a 14’2 trailer quite often there is loads of room despite supposedly only being 4 inches!

and I measure the height of anything I tow.
I normally just do it by eye.

Same here. If it’s lower than my airkit I know it’s less than 3.95m. Anything above, or close if it’s going abroad, gets measured
Perhaps this thread shows the need for DCPC.
(ducking from the stone throwing)
Are all bridges that are measured in metric to the nearest 100mm (thats 4" ) i.e 4.2, 3.6 etc. whereas imperial measurements are to the nearest inch
There are a lot of signs that show the metric higher than the imperial sometimes by 3"
on another thread there is a pic of a bridge showing 3.2 and 10’ 9" whereas 3.2 is only 10’ 6"
which one is right, surely they should be the same height■■?

That has always been my point with the Blackwall Tunnel, both signs contradict each other.

Looks like the google car didn’t want to go under.
If it is marked then by law it has to be at least 3 inches above whatever is marked so don’t even bother slowing up. If you were to hit the bridge … which you won’t by the way, then it’s not your fault, it’s the local highways commisions fault.
I spent years running a 16’ on general haulage, if you worried about bridge heights with that combination you wouldn’t have got anything done, very slow, hanging out the window, better still asking a pedestrian looking pointing and showing the thumb up or down, made people run, they couldnt handle the pressure , mind you I hear you get nailed for that type of behaviour nowadays

Interesting, if you were to go through the tunnel at 13’ 4" and you got stopped by Vosa or the Police and they measured you at 64mm above 4m (4064mm) which is 13’ 4" . Could they try and do you for being too high as you have clearly driven through a prohibit sign.?

No

Did airfreight myself, Q7’s are around 15’6 - 16’3 depending on what was spec’d, so lots of general with a 16’ ish trailer with no problems whatsoever, even around halifax and bacup and places like that, no probs.
Maybe I’m just a frickin’ genius, but I think I just don’t shut my eyes all day

It isnt the police or VOSA who get you at the Blackwall, it is an electronic beam across the roads, that puts the lights on and then a council bod shouts at you and tells you to go up the slope. By the time you get to the top there is a welcoming committee. I used to sit and watch them whilst parked at Tunnel Refineries
I wish I had a pound for everytime I have driven through that tunnel
Before they put the silly beams up you could get through with a 4.2m trailer, that’s 13’ 9" in old money and that was in an empty motor on springs, so probably a little bit higher than that. Never hit anything doing it either, so the actual height is much more than the sign says, it isn’t about saving the tunnel from damage, it is about getting lorries out of London and on the M25, the same thing applies to the bridge at Tulse Hill on the South Circular, if they wanted lorries to use, what used to be the orbital road around London, they would’ve dug that out so you could get a decent height trailer underneath it
I have been driving a 15’ 6" load at 64mph under a 14’ 11" bridge regularly and it fits ok! If you’re afraid to drive under one that’s higher than your trailer then you need to change jobs , especially if, according to the title of the post you consider it a ‘risk’.
Il look in the morning but I’m sure they have reduced the height on the Blackwall to 13 foot now. The have a barrier that comes down and diverts you up tunnel avenue if your higher

What a load of ■■■■■■■■ We used to run boxes out of Vic Deep and even an 8’6" 20’ on a 20’ skelly was over 13’ and nobody ever brought the tunnel down
They also used to run double decker buses through there, and remember it was two way before the new one opened southbound in 1969. 13’ now, just another way to be a PITA and extort money from lorryists, BOCs
Our new roll ons can’t go through there if you use the easy sheet as the arms stick up to high.
I’ve seen pictures of the buses the n/s top was curved to match the tunnel.
I’m sure I remember going through rotherhithe tunnel in a lorry swell when I was a kid.
