Someone earlier in the thread said about not bothering to change the in-cab height indicator which If you get pulled could cost you a £30 fixed penalty if it’s incorrectly set, so I wonder how many drivers do bother to set the it?
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been pulling a 15’ 1" trailer about and as I get different units each night I have been changing the height indicators. When I have again had one of those units for a shift, anything from a couple of days to a week later the indicators without exception have still been showing 15’ 1" even though the regular drives have been pulling 13’ 1" trailers in the meantime.

What about arched bridges as against hoizontal ones?.
Arched bridges are usually marked up with a box showing the part of the bridge that is the height posted, so usually just need to use the centre of the road.
Good grief, when I saw this post this morning I thought it was a joke and didn’t bother with a reply. After reading some of these posts I have to say I’m amazed, why would you not go under a bridge with height better than your vehicle? Some of you need to pack this trucking lark in and go find a milk float.

Just wondering what the general consensus is on bridge heights.
I’ve never really had to worry too much about them before because I’ve never really driven anything on a regular basis which was higher than 14’ roughly (rigids).
But, whenever I see a bridge height warning I’ll always shave 3 inches off before allowing myself through, so for example with a truck 13’7, 13’8, or 13’9 high I wouldn’t go near anything under 14’. (I’d avoid any 13’9 marked bridges)
Perhaps I’m being overly cautious, but I hate taking risks of any kind. Sometimes I’ve been tempted to go under a few 13’9s to save time, trying to convince myself that they’d probably leave some leeway in the measurement anyway … but I’ve never had the gall to do it, always ended up re-routing myself a longer way. What do you guys all do as a general rule of thumb with your heights?

I’m surprised your brave enough to go out of the yard! Find your running height first if the bridge is marked higher than bridge go under it job done. If its marked the same height take it easy but it’ll still more than likely go under it. If its marked a couple of inches smaller up to yourself and if you know the area etc but drop the air and slip under. It’s all up to how big a chance you want to take in this situation and if it’s the middle of night when you can get out and have a look, man up and stop taking unnecessary detours.
Hell yes! There is a 13’9" bridge on the A610 Ripley to Matlock road with the height sensors. We run 4.2m or 13’9" trailers and the sign lights up every time! As someone else said foot down and off you go! If the council have signed it up wrong and you know your height is right and were to hit it think that no one could blame you. Just remember to always know you height.
Has anyone gone round the Caen Peripherique to avoid the low bridge?
There is no need, the low bridge is only on the outside lane as the markings show. It is surprising how many go the opposite way round to get to the Centre Routier

Don’t get caught there by plod putting you midlift down! he has no sense of humour! FLATBEDS and roping and sheeting anyone?

This the 4m bridge on the N65 between s-Hertogenbosch and Tilburg, i’ve triggered the sensors with a 3.95m fridge and Dutch spec Globetrotter… Made the arse twitch a little bit!!

I have done the same at the Coen Tunnel in Amsterdam, the lasers are ■■■■ on, and if the wind gets under your sheet, the Rijkswacht are there before you know it. Once they measure you they let you go, or ■■■■■■ you up the emergency slope and shaft you hard.
Winseer:
Tescos send people on routes where you’re supposed to go under this bridge when plated at 13’9" all the time.
I use the diversion over that backstreet with the speed humps, and don’t even go there when it comes to the return trip.
Not worth the risk on the hiding to nothing this represents.
That’s the one at Tulse Hill by the look of it, my Dad knocked the back doors off a scrap tipper there in the 70s, the trailer had the greedy boards removed, but the back doors still had the extensions on, well, not for long they never

You are driving a 13’ 9" high vehicle and the sign clearly says the maximum vehicle height allowed to proceed is 13’ 9" so why the hell would you need to divert? Aren’t Tesco vehicles on air, why would coming back make any difference?

New tyres
So it would have been less than 13’ 9" with the old tyres then.
