It is illegal to use 3rd lane on a 3 lane motorway. But in roadworks on a 3 lane motorway the motorway status is not in force. That’s why sometimes 6’6" restriction for lane 3. Other times maybe no restriction and all lanes available to any vehicle. It’s to keep traffic flow through roadworks. Have a look at signs beginning of M1 roadworks. Have a proper look.

I think you’ll find that a motorway remains a motorway and motorway regulations apply regardless of whether or not there are roadworks, the only difference is that because of the signs different speeds and lane restrictions can be applied.

If you think it’s not a motorway because of roadworks try stopping for a rest in lane one and see what happens

Exactly. The post from Irish Tony sounds like rdc bull. Does that mean learners are allowed on the m1/m62/m25 then? Of course not.

Ere,now have I got this wrong…When I was on ‘L’ s,a learner wagon could use the motorway?

You already have a full car license before you have your HGV tag.

It’s amazing just how many lorry drivers run right up behind another vehicle on the motorway and expect 3.5 tonne towing vehicles and other over 3.5 to 7.5 which are now speed limited to move over and join the fast lane some of these thick heads are swerving and hooting ,throwing their arms in the air ect .

Dan,don’t you know it’s the law of the road…the bigger the vehikle the more right they have!

I had a Punchards 8 legger pass me Friday night with a Fassi…was it a 42 or 46 t/m crane on. I never know which are yours as you have a few family outfits don’t you, 3 or so?

Mines the foden ,palfinger 14 t/m ,roll on/ off but you won’t have seen it yet as it’s waiting sand blasting ,my current motors the sprinter .

Ah, sorry, I did leave it open to misinterpretation. I meant “Learner Drivers” ie. no full car/bike licence

Most major roadworks are done by large companies who take over the motorway, meaning that the HA do not patrol or manage it (Matrix signs etc.) whilst the road is being repaired/upgraded etc. Upon completion of the job, they “Sign it over” to the HA providing the work is still up to scratch. It is still a motorway, just not “Managed” by the HA
