Idiots guide, tethering my phone

I have just started doing nights out again,
I have a 500mb allowance on my phone,i hardly use any of it,
so i believe i can tether it to my laptop, this would save me having to get a dongle,
i have a usb lead,as my phone only has bluetoth but not wireless,

but how do i get the internet working,

as above,i need an idiots guide,
regards
tonyb

Is it an Android mobile? If it is you could get EasyTether. Makes life so uncomplicated. Once setup you only have to plug the cable in and click on a few icons. One on the phone (or you can leave it on constantly) and the other on the laptop. Which OS do you have on the laptop? XP?

ive got a nokia5230 i think its a symbian phone, the laptop is running vista

Watch out as a lot of networks will charge for you for tethering, even with have 500 meg.

I had the same when I had the I-phone 3GS on O2… I had unlimited internet with my phone package but when I spoke to O2 they told me it DID NOT include tethering. Ive now changed my package as I wasn’t using all that I was paying for and now have the Samsung Nexus still on O2 but with 500mbs of data and have been told I can use it to tether. My advice would be to contact your service provider first as it is expensive if you don’t have tethering in you package. It may work out cheaper to get a dongle and your mobile provider will usually do a deal that isn’t offered to the general public unless they are already a customer.

be very careful with tethering because 500 meg on a laptop won’t last that long. the best thing to do is get a three p.a.y.g dongle cheap to buy not tied to a contract and are the fastest mobile broadband you can get, i tried vodaphone and orange and they are rubbish compared to the three network. i have found very few places it don’t work and its quick enough to watch i player ect which the other networks struggle to get anywhere near the speed required :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

^^This^^

On my return to the UK this winter just gone I bought a PAYG dongle for Three and it was brilliant. Easy to use, usually a decent speed and compared to mobile internet in Canada its absolutely fantastic value. If/When I go back to the UK again thats what I’ll be using.

first you need to download and install OVI suite by nokia from here: nokia.com/global/support/pro … kia-suite/
then when you connect your fone with the usb cable to you laptop, you will be able to conect to internet through your fone

I know this isn’t quite what’re answer you’re looking for but it may help in the future. I use a samsung galaxy ace android phone on the 3 network. I paid for the phone and bought a sim only plan called ‘one’. This has unlimited Internet with tethering for £25 a month and it’s a one month contract so not tied in.
The phone can also be used as a wifi hotspot which is how I use the IPad on the move.

i think i might have to go down the dongle route,as my ohone wont allow me to teher,or if it does i cant get it working
and as 3network is such a good deal, it dosn’t work at my house :imp:

I have the same contract as you for the last few years I have been using mywi a jailbreak ad on o2 will never know well they haven’t for the last few years

decided to go with a 3 contract all you can eat data

anyony have problems when trying to stream tv, either live or on tvcatchup, that it keeps bloody freezing

is it me,

Whilst mobile internet is good for web and email (and the usual other online data sources) for streaming media (apart from youtube), torrenting and downloading large files I wouldn’t recommend it.

Use 3 all you can eat, have used it for tv on phone and on laptop with phone as hot spot, will freeze sometimes depending on signal strength. I dont rely on it for tv though.

all i need to lean now is how to download films and programmes onto my laptop
any heeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllp ■■?

I use an iPhone with an iPad entered and have no problems using Iplayer Netflix or Skype etc from the cab, obviously you need to be in a reasonable coverage area.

I am on Vodafone andits done.

OP

So far as downloading movies and ■■■■ etc to laptop, suggest you do it home with broadband, much quicker and simpler.
