I’m not impressed by the size of truck cabs in the uk, even the giga super doopa mega tastic xxxxxlllll hyper tastic type trucks, especially for long distance. I recently took a look inside a Kenworth T700 and the room was amazing, I think our trucks are appalling in size compared to trucks from other countries, there’s barely enough room to swing a cat, you can have a shower and a dump as well as prepare a three course meal in some of their trucks.
Rest is important, if a person has more room in his or her cab to relax, cook , paperwork, etc, then they will be able to perform much better and not feel so tired when driving.
Question,
When will uk trucks be able to compete in size with other trucks across the globe?
I think you’ll find American type trucks are in the minority across the globe. Most countries use European style cabs.

There are 2 reasons why European sized trucks are the way they are.
- Our maximum length rules are from front bumper to rear bumper, so we can fit on roads built originally for horse and cart.
- Who buys the trucks? Most are bought by company bosses, trailer space is king.
Simple, limited size, load space is king, therefore small cabs.
You can’t compete using a small trailer and big cab, except in certain limited markets. Your bills are almost as big with a small trailer and a big unit. But small loads pay less and rates are tight already.
You both have valid points, but I see no reason why cab sizes couldn’t be larger.
Yes the overall length of truck and trailer would increase, but in fact this would help fuel economy as air flows easier over a longer vehicle.
I should have pointed out, I’m specifically targeting long haul/distance, where larger types of truck could give an advantage.
It is also time to look at maximum length rules.

Last year Renault tried to get a longer overall length rule change. It got kicked out, no messing.
Their idea wasn’t a bigger cab, it was a thicker impact area sticking out from the front a foot(ish) further than now, on a Magnum. It was a crumple zone to make front end accidents less damaging for cars or pedestrians. I can’t really remember all the details, I only saw one small article about this.
The reply they got was a “no chance, see if you can build it into the rules we have now”. Renault dropped it.
So getting rules changed for greater driver comfort? You’ve got a long hard fight in front of you, good luck yer gonna need it.

.
everyone allow bigger cabs, you just have to choose a trailer accordingly. don’t see too many longlines in sweden though, as the limit is still 25.25m.

It may work in a wind tunnel but the extra weight cancels out the saving on mpg same with side skirts on trailers
