How to get a job as a transport operator?

Hello everyone,

In the past I was working in USA as a truckload dispatcher. My responsibilities were below:

The primary function was to generate customer pricing and shipment routing for various domestic and international transportation modes including: direct full/partial truckloads, intermodal, expedited/air, etc. upon taking into consideration internal and external factors that effect market competitiveness and company profitability.
-Communicates with sales, customer service, billing, and other internal departments to respond to customer requests, ensure most effective shipment planning.
-Consults with operations, planning and other internal departments regarding the most cost efficient means to manage the customer’s distribution needs.

When I came to UK ( i live in south of london), I started working in Lidl as a deputy manager. I have to say that I used to like my previous job in USA so that is why would like to find something similar here. Currently, I have some difficulties because I do not have that much UK experience.
I am willing to go and work for two days a week for free to learn and get myself to the required level. Does anyone know what companies are the best to approach? Will it be possible for transport company to hire someone for two days a week as a trainee? I speak perfect Russian, Polish and of course English. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

wouldn’t know where to tell you to start, but the fact you speak polish and russian should make you an asset i’d have thought.
good luck.

a certificate of professional competence in road haulage will help. otherwise you’re just another face in the office.

It is the “working” for free that bothers me.

The problem which I have is that I do not have any experience in UK transport. All job advertisements which I check want minimum 1 year experience. My plan is to work few weeks for free get experience and then get paid work. If you see a different route how to get a job in planning for the person with no experience do let me know, I will be more then happy to try it. thanks,

Try Sealane Freight in Harpenden, I worked for them for the best part of 20 years, they used to interview anyone with an interesting business background. As you already have Transport and/or Freight Forwarding experience, languages, commercial / customer service skills, you should get to talk to someone. You should have a C.V. handy to send them.
Don’t worry about working practice in UK transport offices, they are all different, it all depends on the personality of the staff & managers, trust me I have met all types and then some! I left them in 2006 as trying to make money for someone else in the transport industry made me ill, I am now back behind the wheel and haven’t been happier.

Nolan in Ireland were looking for managers that have your language skills for offices in France and Ireland,or try Heritage in Dover,DSV in Avonmouth,Bristol, they send loads all over the EU and beyond.
LK Walters in Austria would need some one like you, they ship all over the world,im sure that there are numerous firms in Spain and Portugal that have drivers that are from Russia and eastern europe, worth a google to find them and email your cv.Best of luck with it too.
And Alcaline near Dover,Hythe way i think, they go all over for car parts i think, eastern euro staff there.
Further afield i would jump on a plane to Turkey, numerous firms that go the middle east and europe,MARS is one firm, see a lot of Renault small cabs in the Uk,wait till they join the euro.
Nottheger family owned firm in the Austrian Tyrol valleys, they go to Russia and all of Europe and Africa, give them a try too.
